Chapter 3 Why Not Stay For The Night

Joshua broke the awkward silence at the table. With a calm expression, he said gently, "Mom, we've only been married for two years. We don't want a child yet."

Lyla didn't say anything. She lowered her head and pretended to focus on her plate, but a touch of bitter mockery flashed in her eyes. He didn't want a baby? Or did he just not want to have a baby with her?

Maureen knew that she had crossed a line just now, but Joshua was the only child of the Harvey family, and Lyla was also the only child of the Moreno family. The two families were both looking forward to having an heir. Biting her lip, Maureen wanted to try to persuade them, but Kameron gave her a disapproving look.

Maureen sighed and muttered, "You two just got married and you want to spend more time alone—I understand that. But you should start thinking about having a baby soon..."

After dinner, Lyla caught up with Joshua's parents for a little while longer. They didn't leave the house until ten-thirty in the evening.

Maureen had wanted to ask them to stay the night, but the couple refused her invitation at the same time. Joshua said that he had an important meeting in the morning and that the pertinent documents were at their house, so it would be troublesome to go back and get them tomorrow. In the end, Maureen had to let them go.

As soon as she got in the car, Lyla yawned sleepily. She closed her eyes, listening idly to the slight hum of the car's airconditioning.

Just as Lyla was drifting off to sleep, Joshua said lightly, "Nathan will never show up again in Cleopatra after tonight."

Hearing this, Lyla's eyes popped open in surprise.

The street lights coated his side profile in a warm glow. From his prominent nose to his chiseled jaw line, his face seemed to be God's best work of art.

One of the reasons why Lyla had chosen Nathan was that he was quite handsome, but even so, Nathan's good looks were nothing compared to that of the man sitting next to her now.

Joshua had good looks, a good family background, and a good personality. He was always gentle and calm, and he had a temperament that couldn't be compared.

If it weren't for the fact that her mother and Maureen had been best friends for over a decade and had entrusted her to Maureen's care on the deathbed, she wouldn't have been able to marry him.

"Don't provoke me in such a stupid way next time. I'm not as patient as I look," Joshua added, turning his head to look at Lyla coldly.

Despite being threatened by him, Lyla just smiled. She had figured that since Joshua didn't love her, then he wouldn't have minded if she paid a gigolo using his money. It turned out that her husband had simply been waiting for the perfect opportunity to throw it back at her face.

But she didn't expect that he waited three whole months before doing anything...

Well, on second thought, it made sense. That was Joshua Harvey for you.

He was like a beast lurking in the grass, waiting for its prey to relax its vigilance before striking—hard.

He wouldn't argue with her. Instead, he'd let her see the true colors of the man she had chosen with her own eyes. He would make her end the relationship on her own initiative, and in this way, he could solve this problem once and for all.

"Maybe you're just too bored and need something to do. Maybe my mom was right," Joshua said suddenly.

The smile on Lyla's face froze. "What? You mean... We should have a baby?" Ridiculous!

After a pause, Joshua whispered gently, "If you want a child, I can give you one."

He didn't say anything more, but Lyla understood what he meant. The feelings she had been suppressing all night suddenly came to a head. "You mean the kid living on 14th, Springton Street?"

The Harvey Residence wasn't far from the Harvey Mansion. Now that they had arrived, Lyla took a few deep breaths in an effort to calm down, but it was futile. The anger that had been brewing since three months ago was too much to handle.

"Mr. Harvey, although we were forced to marry and we don't have any feelings for each other, it doesn't mean that I'm willing to raise someone else's child. If you want to take the child home, just sign the divorce papers. By then, not only can you bring home the child, but also the child's mother."

Then she opened the door and got out of the car, slamming the door behind her. She stormed into the house without looking back, but she heard the sound of the car starting behind her. It seemed that Joshua had no intention of staying.

Why couldn't he stay at the Harvey Residence for the night?

Lyla shook her head wryly. Over the past three months, he went to 14th, Springton Street to keep somebody else company every night. Rather than some made-up meeting, that was the true reason why he left so hurriedly.
