Chapter 4 14th Springton Street

When did Lyla start to be aware of the family living on 14th Springton Street?

It was when she accidentally found a property ownership certificate in the drawer.

The Harvey Corporation was engaged in the real estate industry. As such, there were many houses under Joshua's name. Those houses were either unique or too valuable to sell. After all, given Joshua's identity, owning a house was probably akin to a woman owning a jewelry. To him, they were nothing more than accessories.

However, the residence on Springton Street was merely an ordinary house. Located near the subway station and the supermarket, the house was less than 100 square yards big, with two bedrooms and one living room.

It was undoubtedly a sweet little home for a core family, which wasn't Joshua's style. However, his name was clearly written on its ownership certificate.

After discovering the certificate, Lyla's curiosity was piqued. One day, when she happened to pass by the Springton Street, she decided to pay it a visit in person.

There, she saw a familiar car parked at the 14th. A man wearing a black suit and a trench coat got out of the back seat. But before he could close the car door, a little boy, probably aged three or four, ran out of the house and clung to the man's thigh.

"Daddy!" the boy shouted loudly.

Lyla felt as though she was struck by lightning. As she continued watching, she saw a gentle-looking woman standing by the door, looking up at them with a smile.

The man picked up the child into his arms and walked towards the woman. The warm lights reflected his calm and relaxed expression. He looked like any ordinary loving husband who had just gotten home from work.

With a sound of water splashing, Lyla came out of the bathtub and dried her body. The huge mirror on the wall reflected her perfectly crafted body as well as a pink scar across her abdomen. She picked up the bathrobe on the hanger and put it on.

It was almost twelve o'clock when Lyla had finished drying her hair. Alone, she lay flat on her big bed. She stared at the ceiling with eyes wide awake.

She didn't know exactly when, but after a while, she fell asleep. Shortly after that, the ringtone of her phone roused her awake.

With a frown, Lyla picked up the phone on the bedside table.

When she pressed the phone against her ears, she heard a man's voice speak from the other line.

"There are a few new boys here in the Golden Club. All of them look handsome. Do you want to come and see them for yourself?"

Lyla pulled the phone away and squinted at the caller ID. As she suspected, it was Derrick Ramos who had called. Slightly baffled, Lyla opened her mouth and said, "You went to the Golden Club so early in the morning? Are you okay?"

Derrick chuckled, "Don't you think it's better to be here in the morning? It's quiet right now. Are you coming or not?"

Lyla had to admit that he made a good point. So, she kicked her quilt away and said, "Fine. I'm on my way."

"Good. I'll be waiting for you."

After hanging up the phone, Lyla got up, washed up, and went downstairs.

The Harvey Mansion was built over a hundred years ago. It was first established as the Harvey family's residence after Joshua's great grandfather settled in Cleopatra. Since then, it had become the residence of every heir to the Harvey family.

As Lyla arrived downstairs, the servants bowed to her. The housekeeper went up to her and said, "Mrs. Harvey, breakfast is ready."

"Did Joshua come here this morning?" Lyla asked.

"Mr. Harvey should be in the company now," the housekeeper answered respectfully.

"So he didn't come back," Lyla thought to herself.

She realized that what Joshua had told Maureen was a lie. He didn't have an important meeting in the morning. He also didn't leave the documents in the mansion.

Suddenly, Lyla had lost her appetite to eat breakfast. So, she changed into a pair of high-heeled shoes and drove straight to the Golden Club.

From the name of the club alone, it was obvious that it was a place that catered to the rich.

This was a famous private club in Cleopatra, and it specialized in entertaining rich playboys like Derrick. When Lyla got there, Derrick was already sitting in a booth, watching hot girls as they danced on the stage. Since it wasn't official business hours of the Golden Club yet, he was the only customer here.

Lyla sat down and poured herself a glass of red wine. After drinking it down in one gulp, she turned to Derrick and asked, "So, where are the boys?"

After all, that was the entire reason why she was here.

Derrick turned to Lyra with a scrunched face. "Are you serious? Nathan has already disappeared. If Joshua finds out that you're looking for a new man, he will..."

Derrick didn't finish his words. Instead, he just made a cutting gesture to his neck while arching his eyebrows playfully.

Lyla scoffed and sighed. "He gets to spend quality time with his beloved ones. Why can't I entertain myself with men?" she said lazily.

"Quality time with his beloved ones? What do you mean by that?"

Derrick didn't understand, and Lyla didn't bother to explain. The two stared at each other for a while until Derrick finally got it. "Holy shit... He's having an affair?"

"Yup," Lyla answered as she leaned back against the chair and stretched her legs.

"And... a child?"

"Yup."

Derrick put down his crossed legs. He had been friends with Lyla since they were kids, which was why he always sided with her. Even though rich people like him usually fooled around with all kinds of women, having an illegitimate child was still absurd.

After all, what kind of upper-class family would accept a bastard? If the news got out, it would cause a scandal!

"Are you sure that's what you've seen? Maybe you're just misunderstanding it."

Lyla shook her head. "I saw it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. How could there be any misunderstanding? The child even called him 'Daddy'!"

She took a sip of her wine and swallowed it slowly. While the initial taste of the red wine was mellow, its aftertaste was a bit bitter.

"Also, I have talked to that woman."
