Chapter 8 Almost Getting Recognized

Sheila panicked. She tried to turn away as far as she could so that Gerald wouldn't see her face. She murmured, "But I have work to do. I... I'm a stand-in for Bella."

Gerald saw that Sheila was panicked and uneasy. He couldn't shake the feeling that he'd already met her.

At the thought of this, he drew Sheila closer to him and asked in a low and serious voice, "I want to know your name."

"I..." Sheila's face went extremely pale as she quickly thought about how to answer the question. She didn't want Gerald to know who she was.

There was a brief silence. Suddenly, Sheila saw Saul walking toward them out of the corner of her eye. She immediately called to him. "Saul!"

"Your work here is done. I was about to give you your pay. This is..."

Saul approached Sheila and realized that the person standing next to her was Gerald. Saul asked in surprise, "Mr. Lamont. What are you doing here? Your assistant has been looking for you. He may have something important to tell you."

Gerald remained motionless and kept his eyes fixed on Sheila.

Saul soon realized that something might have gone wrong between the two people in front of him. He bowed to Gerald and said, "Mr. Lamont, did this new actress offend you? I'll ask her to apologize to you right now."

Gerald shook his head and left without saying anything.

Once Gerald was out of sight, Saul pulled Sheila aside and asked, "What happened just now? Don't you know that Mr. Lamont hates people who play tricks and get what they want through bending unwritten rules the most?"

Sheila knew that Saul had misunderstood her, so she explained in a hurry, "No, Saul, it's not like that. Winnie is going to be engaged to Mr. Lamont. I was afraid that he would recognize me, so I'd been staying out of his way. I didn't expect to meet him. It was just an accident."

"It's good that you're not planning to do anything stupid." Saul, who knew what had happened to Sheila, felt relieved and advised, "Mr. Lamont is at the top of the social ladder. We have no business rubbing shoulders with him. We best stay away."

Sheila lowered her head and then nodded in agreement.

Looking at Sheila's thin frame, Saul sighed again, "You're pretty and have good acting skills. If it weren't for Winnie, you wouldn't have been a stand-in here."

Saul was really worried about her. Sheila reassured him, "Don't worry, Saul. After all, the Newell family has paid for Ivan's medical expenses. That's all I care about right now."

Before Saul could say anything, Sheila's phone rang.

Sheila smiled apologetically at Saul and answered the call.

The nurse said in an anxious voice, "Miss Newell, your brother's condition has deteriorated all of a sudden. He has been taken to the operating room. Please come as soon as you can."

Sheila's heart jumped to her throat, and she almost lost grip of her phone.

After hanging up, she told Saul about Ivan. Saul immediately handed her pay to her and let her rush to the hospital.

When Sheila arrived, the operation was over. Ivan was in a coma now and had been transferred to the ICU.

Sheila walked up to Ivan's doctor and asked, "Doctor, when will my brother wake up?"

"His condition has deteriorated, and he needs to receive the next phase of treatment as soon as possible. But Miss Newell, the cost is prohibitive. You..."

Looking at Sheila who was thin and pale, the doctor couldn't bear to continue.

"I will raise the money," Sheila said firmly and then implored, "Just please save my brother."

Seeing the doctor nod and leave, Sheila took a deep breath and felt a little relieved.

"I will find a way to cure you, Ivan. Just hold on." Sheila took a look at Ivan, whose face was pale before walking out of the ward.

Sheila returned to the house of the Newell family. The moment she walked through the front door, somebody dumped a bucket of ice-cold water over her head. The cold immediately seeped through her clothes and into her bones.

Then, Winnie's icy voice reached Sheila's ears.

"Bitch! How dare you come back?"
