Chapter 6 Are You Shirking Your Responsibilities

Mary Miller kept dashing forward and nimbly made a turn at an intersection. She cleverly hid in the green belt.

The two subordinates of Eric Carter, who were running after her, passed the plants without noticing the woman.

Mary was too scared to cry.

She stayed in the green belt until noticing that Eric's car left in the end.

It was getting dark, and the road lamp on the corner of the street was turned on.

Mary wandered on the road, looking up at the starry sky above the city.

No matter how bright the neon lights were, they could not illumine her heart.

She was penniless, hungry, and exhausted. Also, her feet were aching.

Her father had left her twelve years ago, and Uncle Frank eventually gave her up in front of interests. What could she do?

At the thought of what had happened, Mary began to sob again. The world seemed wonderful, but why had she ended up being homeless?

As a young woman who had just graduated from college, she felt so confused in the life crossroad.

A Rolls-Royce was moving slowly along the road, and Hank Cook, who was driving the vehicle, found the female figure ahead of the car familiar.

It was because of the dress the woman was wearing, which made her look like a mermaid.

"Young Master Mike, that woman looks like Miss Miller."

Mike Johnson, who had closed his eyes due to fatigue, suddenly opened them and shone rays of light.

Mary was vaguely aware that if she continued walking along the road, she would arrive at a luxury residential area. Therefore, she planned to turn around.

Just then, the flashing lights of an automobile blinded her eyes.

"Miss Miller."

Hank got out of the vehicle and greeted the woman, giving off a secure, friendly vibe.

Mary beamed with joy. "Oh, it's you!"

Upon seeing that the woman's messy appearance, Hank asked with concern, "What happened to you?"

Mary lowered her head to look at the dirty dress, which was soiled as she fell earlier and replied to the man with tears in her eyes, "My uncle wants me to marry a horrible man. I don't want to, so I ran away."

"Well," Hank frowned and stepped forward. "Miss Miller don't be afraid. We will protect you. Please come with us."

While speaking, he pulled Mary towards the car.

"Where are we going?" Before Mary could figure out what was going on, the man pushed her into the back seat, and she fell into a warm embrace of the other man.

"Mermaid, you're back," Mike hugged the woman and laughed.

Mary was startled to be held by the man. However, she could do nothing to get rid of that but let him continue.

It seemed that Mike had drunk a lot, and he kept calling Mary "Mermaid."

"Sir, you're drunk," said Mary, scenting out the strong smell of alcohol on the man and hiding towards one side awkwardly.

Hank looked back from the driver's seat, smiled, and started the vehicle.

The man's alcoholic breathing blushed the woman's face.

Seeing Mary's reddened, swollen eyes, Mike asked, "Did you cry?"

The man got extremely close to the woman. Mary tilted her head and answered in a weak voice, "I am fine. Could you please sit a bit further away?"

"Be obedient, woman," Mike said, holding her head and kissing her.

Mary tried to resist, and their lips and teeth collided.

With her hands pressing against the man's chest, she said nervously, "Sir, you are drunk. You are drunk."

Mike kissed the woman's neck and replied in a mellow, sexy voice. "I wasn't drunk last night. Are you pretending that you had not slept with me?"

Mary was speechless.

Fortunately, Mike stopped his movements. He leaned against Mary and seemed to have fallen asleep. He was genuinely drunk.

Soon, the car was pulled up in front of a European-style villa on the bank of the North River.

Hank got out of the vehicle and opened the door for the woman. "Miss Miller, please get off the car."

"Mermaid, don't go." Mike was unwilling to let go of her.

"Young Master Mike, we've arrived." Hank helped the man get out of the auto.

Standing behind the two men, Mary hesitated to follow them.

Noticing that the woman was motionless, Hank urged her by saying, "Come on in, Miss Miller. Please don't worry. We're not bad guys. Let's talk inside."

Mary indeed did not think Hank would pose a threat to her, so she followed his advice.

Due to her decision at that moment, Mary's fate started to change dramatically.
