Chapter 10 The Consequence Of Being Distracted

No good deed went unnoticed.

Before, Nina didn't believe in that saying. But what happened today just proved she was an idiot for not believing in it earlier.

The moment she saw the man writhing in pain, she could only think of her brother suffering through the pain. And she could help the man with just one phone call. Although it made her miss her interview that day, seeing that man's smile made her realize that it was the right thing to do.

Nina let the man borrow her phone to call someone and inform them of his situation. Eavesdropping on his call, she surmised that he was some sort of leader. She waited with him until someone came for him. To her shock, the person who came was the person who interviewed her last time. Suddenly, she realized that the company she was interviewed for was owned by this man! The man she helped was actually the general manager of the Garden Hotel.

In the end, her good deed was rewarded. She was hired.

"My name is Nixon Han. I'd be honored to have a kind and pretty girl like you work in my hotel." The man she saved smiled at her from the hospital bed. Without the pain twisting his features, Nina could see how bright and clear he looked.

It was a good thing for her. But she had to make it clear that she had to leave from time to time, whenever her brother would need her. Before it could even become an issue, she wanted to let them know about it ahead of time. When Nixon Han heard how Nina was solely responsible for taking care of her brother, who underwent a kidney transplant, he only had pride in his eyes as he said softly, "I understand. If you want to work in the hotel's restaurant, I can pay you by the hour so you can take care of your brother any time."

After a week, Nina had been getting the hang of working in the restaurant of the Garden Hotel. She felt very happy there.

Her co-workers were all happy and welcoming. Whether it was the foreman or some junior staff, they all smiled brightly and cared for her. It made her feel very lucky. After learning about her housing situation, Nixon Han offered her a spot in the employee dormitory. Her heart was full of warmth at how everyone at the Garden Hotel genuinely cared for her. To repay their generosity, Nina worked very hard. She wanted to show how much she appreciated her job and their kindness.

"Nina, my stomach hurts really badly. Can you cover for me in the Lotus private box? All you have to do is serve the customers there." Teresa patted Nina on the shoulder and rushed to the washroom. Left with no choice, Nina immediately went to the reception area of the Lotus private box. She waited for the bell to ring and the dishes to come.

It wasn't the first time she had to cover for her colleagues. Anyway, it wasn't a difficult task.

In fact, the Garden Hotel wasn't a big hotel. But despite its size, it managed to serve the best quality food and service. Its patrons enjoyed every bite of the hotel's scrumptious food. Soon, it became known for its unparalleled service. The private rooms needed to be reserved ahead of time. Slowly, the name Garden Hotel became synonymous for elite service that attracted the upper class. Instead of standing in the private rooms, the waiters waited for the bell in the reception to ring. This was so that the customers would enjoy privacy as they dined.

Standing in the reception area, Nina looked at the tableware on the operating table and imagined how they would look on the hands of the hotel's patrons. Suddenly, the bell rang so she immediately pushed open the heavy wooden door.

The delicious aroma of the room hit her. There was a luxurious chandelier that hung from the ceiling that almost blinded her. Sweet music flowed from the piano on the corner. Nina stepped into the private room with a smile on her face. She was about to ask what the customers needed when she found a familiar person in the room.

His enchanting face, and the faint smile that played on the corners of his mouth had always made him stand out from the crowd. In his arms was an equally beautiful and well-dressed woman with a smooth back. Her pouty lips were colored blood orange.

"Pour the wine!" Hearing someone order, Nina immediately lowered her head and dared not to look in the direction of the swaying couple. She kept repeating to herself, 'We don't know each other. We don't know each other.'

She held the wine rack and pretended everything was fine. She was a picture of calm waters as she walked towards him. He sat at the middle of the table, meaning she should pour him wine first.

She walked up to him and bent down to pour. She tried to maintain the polite smile on her face. He was just a stranger. Nothing more, nothing less. But the moment she poured the wine, the strong perfume of the woman beside him wafted towards her nostrils. It reminded her of what he said that night at her. He hated the smell of perfumes.

If he really did though, what was he doing with this woman?

She stole a glance at him and saw how he was frowning at his glass. She followed his eyes and saw that she had filled his glass almost to the brim. If it weren't for his frown, she wouldn't notice she had poured too much.

"What's wrong with you?" the woman beside him asked. She immediately changed her features into a meek lamb and smiled at Nina as if nothing happened earlier. "I understand we get distracted by handsome men, but please be mindful of what you're doing at the moment."

The woman tried to express her dissatisfaction with kindness, which only made Nina feel very embarrassed.

She apologized and went down the table to pour everyone wine. After that, she retreated to one side and asked if she could help with anything else. With nothing to do, she went back to the reception. Before she could even close the door, her ears caught how Bobby's companion ridiculed her. "Mr. Teng, your handsomeness would always make women panic and lose their minds over you."

That made Nina look back. She saw how Bobby reached out to pinch the cheek of the woman. He smiled dotingly at her and said, "You're wrong. They won't lose their minds with me. They lose their bodies."

"Hahaha!" His fawning audience laughed at him. The door closed and blocked off any scene thereafter. What Bobby said made Nina uncomfortable. She remembered how she lost her virginity that night, his hands all over her.

Unconsciously, she hugged her arms to herself. She didn't want to dwell on his words. Just then, Teresa came back with a relieved expression on her face. "Honey, thank you so much. Did they call you?"

"They called me once to pour them wine. Since you're alright now, I'll go outside," Nina said with a smile.

As soon as she arrived at the door, the foreman walked to her and asked, "Where have you been?"

"Oh. Teresa had a stomachache. I covered for her for a while."

"Okay, you can go to the lounge. There was a phone call for you." As soon as the foreman finished his words, the expression on Nina's face changed.

As a waitress, she was not allowed to bring her phone as she did her shift. It was a rule implemented, so the employees worked without any distraction. This rule also assured their high-class and famous patrons their privacy was safe. However, it also meant she couldn't be reached if anything happened.

It wasn't like Nina had friends who would call her often. Her phone would only ring from one source, the hospital.

"Hello?" Nina held her phone tightly with trepidation. "Doctor He, is there anything wrong with my brother?"

"Today's physical test showed that there was something wrong with the transplant. His temperature rose and he also caught a cold. I suspect it might be a rejection reaction, so he needs to be transferred to the ICU for further surveillance. Before we do so, we will need your signature."

"Okay, I'll be right there!" After she hung up the phone, Nina went to alert the foreman that she had to leave early that day. She had a special permission from the manager to leave whenever she needed so the foreman allowed her to go. She quickly changed her clothes and rushed out.

In the Lotus private box, people laughed as they talked amongst themselves. Bobby held a glass of wine as he enjoyed conversing with someone by the window. Suddenly, a running figure from outside caught his eyes. He thrust his glass to the person he was talking to and hastily said, "Please excuse me. I have something urgent to deal with. I'll talk with you tomorrow." Then, he grabbed his coat from the hanger and rushed out.
