Chapter 5 Five

I tried my best to stay away from Landon throughout the day while I only stayed in my room. My stomach grumbled and I got up from the bed and pulled the blind off the curtain to the side and saw that it was already getting dark.

I walked to the door and held the handle for a second then I pulled the door. I grabbed on to the rail of the stairs and saw that there was no one downstairs. I released a deep sigh and walked down the stairs and to the kitchen.

The fridge also looked inviting, and immediately I thought of food; my stomach grumbled. I wiped my sweaty hands on my leggings and looked behind me to make sure the coast was clear.

I gulped and opened the fridge. My eyes instantly landed on the sandwich sitting there.

I didn't mind that it was cold as I took a bite.

"You're the Alpha's mate."

I chocked on my food and quickly turned around to see a man standing behind me. "You're the Alpha's mate." He said again while I quickly swallowed the food.

I looked around and saw that there was no one else but the man. "Who are you?" I questioned, my gaze moving from him to his back to make sure there was no one else around.

He chuckled and stepped forward wile I took a step back and my hand tightened around the cold sandwich.

"Oh right! My name is Kyle, the Alpha's beta." He answered with a smile while I only frowned.

"I believe this is the part where you tell me what your name is...." He trailed off with a smile while gesturing with his hand.

"L-luna" I stammered and then cleared my throat. "My name is Luna"

"Luna," He mumbled my babe and then Beta Kyle stepped forward again while I gripped the counter tightly. His gaze moved to my hand then to my face and he sighed. "I was just going to see the Alpha," he added and began to walk backwards.

He paused and turned his head to me. "Luna... I want you to know that you have to be patient with our Alpha. I can tell from the look in your eyes that he must have said some things that he didn't mean too." He quickly walked away after those words while I frowned and looked down at the remaining sandwich in my hand. A single tear rolled down my cheek and my appetite now lost, Iwiped my hands on my sweater, and then left the kitchen.

I opened the door, and it made a 'click' sound. I glanced at the living room once more before stepping out into the dark night.

As I walked, I was relieved to see that no one was in sight, but I feared that the guards who patrolled the gates would stop me and send me back to my mate-their Alpha.

I didn't want that. I didn't want to be sent back to him, my mate who wanted nothing to do with me!

Approaching the gate, sweat broke out on my forehead, even though the air was really cold. I breathed in and out through my mouth when one of the guards noticed me.

He tapped the man next to him and pointed at me. "I would like to pass through," I said to them with fake confidence, as if I knew what I was doing, but deep down, I was scared that they might send me back.

"Where are you going?" asked the man who had tapped the other a few seconds ago.

"Well, you need-" he started but was cut off by the other man. "-Let her go, man. She reaks of Alpha's scent. She must be one of his whores," the second man said, rolling his eyes and taking a smoke out of the cigarette in his hand and then throwing it to the ground.

His words were like a stab to my chest. I wasn't the Alpha's first but he was mine. I swallowed harshly and stared blankly at the black gate-waiting for it to open.

The first man narrowed his eyes at me before releasing a sigh and opening the gate. I smiled at him in thanks and left the mansion.

I watched as the dark gate closed and realized that I had nowhere to go, but that didn't mean I would go back there.

I couldn't go back to Dark Moon. Marcus would kill me-he said so himself before I ran for the woods.

The night was dark, with the moon as my guide. Maybe the Moon Goddess was on my side today.

I walked into the forest, careful of the fallen branches on the ground. After about an hour of walking, my mind raced with thoughts of how I would survive alone out here.

Goddess, if I could just find an abandoned cottage somewhere, where no one could find me, I would be so happy. I could plant various types of vegetables in the backyard of my home.

Home.

Something I never had and might not even have, but that doesn't stop a girl from dreaming.

I was already growing tired, and my legs were becoming sore from walking such a long distance. I looked around for a place where I could rest for the night. I looked up and nodded my head; the large tree would do.

It was large enough and filled with leaves that could protect me from anyone who passed by.

I rolled up the sleeves of my sweater and rubbed my palms together.

I jumped up and let out a victorious laugh when I caught onto the branch I was aiming for.

"Perfect," I mumbled with a smile, but unfortunately, no one was around to see it.

Why is it that when I do awesome stuff, there's never even a bird to witness it, but when I do the most embarrassing things, everyone is always around to watch and laugh?

I fell to the ground when I tried placing my foot on a smaller branch. Thank goodness no one was around to see that.

Trying again and succeeding this time, I crossed my left foot in front of my right to find a comfortable balance on the branch.

I covered my head with the hood of the sweater and rested my head on my knees, slowly drifting off to sleep.

I woke up to the sound of people laughing, and I instantly recognized one of the voices. Beta Alan.

My breathing and heart rate increased, and I pressed my palms against the tree bark.

"Beta, her scent is stronger here," someone said, and my eyes widened.

They're looking for me.

And when they find me, they'll kill me.

Beta Alan shushed them and walked around my tree. I looked down at his bald head and bit my lip until it bled, so no sound would escape my mouth.

"It's still fresh here," he whispered to them, inhaling deeply. "She's hiding somewhere around here," another voice added.

"Luna," Beta Alan murmured, dragging out my name mockingly. "Come out from wherever you're hiding. We just want to talk to you," he finished, making his subordinates snicker.

My left leg slipped from the branch, and my eyes widened. They all looked up at me with sadistic smiles.

"Found you."
