Chapter 4 Finding the worst

"Take this," A lady in ox blood red silk pants and a white shirt with sleeves said as she handed over the files to me. "Miss Stone, office assistant. Take this to Mr Rogers, thanks."

I walked into the elevator and pressed the button for the top floor, I took in a deep breath. First day at work, what would go wrong?

I asked myself this question as I watched the elevator doors open onto the top floor.

The office was huge and well-decorated. There was an elegant-looking leather couch with gold detailing on it next to two matching chairs. And there were paintings on almost every wall. It looked more like a museum than a workplace.

I walked in and dropped the files on the table, my eyes captured the name tag that was placed on the table. "Mr Rogers," I read out loud and brushed my hand against the gold written letters.

The door opened and Mr Rogers strode in, heat crept up my cheek as I recollected the incident that had happened at my house. With the look on his face, I was sure he wasn't happy.

He walked over to sit on a chair his hand resting on the table, he took the files and placed them on top of his desk. His head tilted back and his jaw locked. I could tell he didn't want to talk but he knew he couldn't ignore me, something was bordering on him.

I walked over to the other side in the office which had a single chair and table, and sat down. His gaze followed me but I ignored him. The office was quiet for a while as I tried to ignore Mr Rogers's stares, it was almost like he was deliberating on something and was unsure if it was right.

I compose myself ignoring the thoughts that were piercing my chest. The door creaked open and the lady I met on the first day, the nice smiling lady now with the look of an angry beast as she bounced in. I'm sure she was ready to tear the office apart.

She made her way towards Mr Rogers and slammed her fist on the table. "No, you can't cancel our wedding, I have plans! You can't do this to me!" She exclaimed.

Mr Rogers sighed as his shoulders slumped forward, his eyes partially flitted in my direction. I looked away immediately.

"You know my parents will sue you in court for this." She bit her lower lips as tears rolled down her eyes. "What went wrong? what did I ever do to you?"

Mr Rogers sighed and placed his fingers on his forehead. "I can't marry you anymore, because I don't love you. I love someone else and I'm going to get married to her."

Her eyes widened as she looked around the room before returning to Rogers. "I don't understand, you like someone else and because of that you called off our wedding?"

"Yes," Mr Rogers agreed and stood up. He looked in my direction and I looked away pretending I was not listening to his conversation. "She's here."

The moment he said that my heart stopped. There were only two ladies in the office and that was his fiancee and I, if he wasn't referring to her then it meant he was referring to...my jaw dropped.

Before I could download everything that was happening, Rogers grabbed my hand and pulled me up to my feet. "Alva, this is my wife-to-be. Alva meets Becca Stone."

The blood in my body rushed to my head as I stood transfixed, I tried to blink away the fog. I was more shocked than Alva. She was speechless. Her eyes filled with hatred and jealousy as she stared at me, I'm sure if Mr Rogers wasn't there I would've been dead.

"You! the poor bitch. Who'd you think you are?" Alva Screamed, her voice cracking and wavering.

"This all a misunderstanding, I don't..." Before I could complete my statement, Mr Rogers squeezed my hand and I got caught up in words.

"I can't believe you'll leave someone like me." Alva rubbed her hand against her perfectly structured body, she looked at her dress which was the same color as her lipstick and it shined like a mirror in my eyes.

In comparison, I didn't even have all she had, money, fame, and even good classy clothes. I was just an average working-class lady who couldn't afford to get myself all she had. She looked so beautiful and delicate.

"It isn't like that." I stuttered feeling guilty, I looked up to see a smirk on Mr Rogers's face as he watched Alva. I couldn't believe he had the guts to lie and still enjoy watching his fiancee suffer.

"I can't take this!" She mumbled, with that, she stormed out of the office and slammed the doors behind her as she exited.

Mr Rogers sighed as she left and let go of my hand. "Don't feel bad, she's always like this," he commented walking over to his desk and sitting back down.

I wrapped my arms over my chest. "Why did you tell her that you're getting married to me?"

He scoffed. "Because you are!"

My heart sank. "But...how?" I couldn't comprehend how he could say something like that without asking for my consent.

His brows furrowed and he leaned back in his chair. "Because I want you to marry me."

I didn't understand. What exactly was he trying to accomplish by saying all that to me? "I'm sorry but is this a joke?"

He laughed and walked close to me. His finger brushed against my chin and he pushed my face closer to him, I gulped. He was so close to me, he smelled like fresh mint and aftershave, something completely unexpected on him.

He ran his index finger along my jawline as if he wanted to memorize it. "How would I make jokes about being engaged?"

"I thought this was a joke," I whispered.

"It isn't," he said and made his way back to his seat. "I don't want to marry her, she's too selfish, proud, and self-centered. I can't spend the rest of my life with someone like her."

I still couldn't understand what he was saying or where he was he was heading until he continued and I couldn't believe what he said.
