I ignored him and continued watching Tasyra eat and chat with that farm guy, I was going to find out who he was. She had no right to talk to anyone, she was supposed to be working.
"You rejected the mate bond, Haden." Gaya put in, obviously trying to make fun of me.
"What is your problem?" I angrily asked.
"Just want to know why you're here monitoring the girl you rejected when we already have another girl we want to marry."
"So when it comes to the rejection, it's me. But for Zaryn, it becomes us?" I was getting irritated. I felt like slapping Gaya.
"You rejected her even though I asked you not to." He argued hotly.
"You would prefer a slave girl who is no good to us over a girl from a respectable home? That is such a good choice." I uttered, sarcasm dripping from my words.
Gaya sighed, stretching himself from his corner in my head. "I understand the position you hold and how important it is, but that night with her was unforgettably good, you know that."
"Sadly, being the Alpha of the biggest pack requires finding a suitable Luna, which also requires finding a woman who means more than just good sex." I retorted.
"Greet sex." Gaya corrected.
I groaned in exasperation. My eyes were still narrowed in on them. My brows furrowed when she began sobbing, and he placed a hand on her shoulders, comforting her. I let out a displeased growl.
"What exactly is the matter, Haden?" Gaya again.
"She should be working. That is what she should be doing."
"Unlike you, Haden, I'm very jealous seeing our mate being so close to another man and seeing him have a hand on her shoulder, even though the gesture seem quite harmless." He paused, stifling a growl. "But I am not the human here, unfortunately." He sneered, making mean emphasis on 'unfortunately'.
"What do you mean by that?" My gaze was still stationed on them.
"Nothing, Haden. We should go be with Zaryn, she's our Luna to be." Gaya said.
And it was the truth. Zaryn was going to be my Luna. She fit the role perfectly. Being my Beta's daughter, she surely ticked the 'coming from a respectable home' box. She was smart, strong willed and was as tough as they came, just like my mother.
My mother had done well as Luna with my father, and I was not going to fail the family's legacy and name by going astray and bringing in a woman who was not fit. It baffled me why the Moon Goddess did not make Zaryn my mate, but Tasyra instead.
Tasyra used to be someone special, a long time ago, until she proved otherwise. I could not believe she could do what she did and still expected our friendship to remain the same. I used to like her, very much. And I knew, even though we were still little then, that the Moon Goddess had made us recognize ourselves as mate, I would have happily agreed and accepted the mate bond, but she'd proven she was not worth it.
The Moon Goddess might have made her my mate, but there was no rule that said the mate bond must be accepted. I could not live with such a person as my mate. Aside the status and name, there was something Tasyra was that I was happy that Zaryn was not.
I would not have to battle all my life living with her, and when troubles arose, I would not understand how it came to be or that the woman I married was responsible for it. My mother had saved me from a lifetime of calamity and pain, and that was the reason why I would continually be grateful for her.
The Moon Goddess was our creator, and she probably knew best but in this case, she had made a mistake. It was not supposed to be Tasyra but Zaryn.
"I can hear your thoughts, Haden." Gaya announced, after being suspiciously quiet for a while.
"So?" I made a face so only he could see. I did not want others thinking their Alpha had gone crazy.
"If you think it's not supposed to be Tasyra, then what are you still doing watching her being close to another man? I am getting angry witnessing the scenario, let's go."
"And who told you I am here for just her?" I questioned, feeling attacked by his words and insinuations and not liking it one bit.
"So what are you here for then?" He retorted.
"This is my farm, and I am here to inspect the workers."
"But your eyes and thoughts have been occupied by one person."
"It has been not!" I denied hotly.
"Don't raise your voice at me, Haden. I am not any of your maids."
I scoffed. "stop being childish."
"Coming from the one who is standing there watching a girl he rejected as his mate and getting angry over her involvement with another guy."
From his tone, he was taunting and I was not going to give him the chance to say more. It was better I called it quits.
"Hey, Haden." I turned to the direction the familiar voice came from.
A smile spread my lips. "Zaryn."
She walked closer and gave me a kiss on my cheek. "What is my Alpha doing here?"
"Nothing, just checking my workers." My gaze swept round the endless length of the farm and the workers, and landed on her again.
They were laughing as though they were old friends. She was a slave. A mere slave, born in captivity. She was different from these workers. They deserved their breaks, but she didn't.
"Are you okay?" I heard Zaryn ask.
But I was too angry to pay attention. She should not be laughing. Without thinking of what I was doing next, I marched towards the farm, and toward her. Zaryn followed, her arm snaked through mine.
"Tasyra, what are you doing?!" I glared angrily. Watching her face morph from the relaxed, contented state it was in to a terrified one.
Good. Let her be.
