Chapter 5 A CHANGE OF ROOM

At 4:00pm I was fully packed and ready for the trip.

Andrea’s wedding was to take place in Arizona, the trip should take roughly 2 hours.

Carl’s car arrived some minutes after 4pm, the driver announced that we would pick Carl some streets ahead.

We finally got to where Carl was, he had a bag which appeared to have a lady’s dress in it, probably his fiancée would be there and I’d get to meet her.

Maybe the dress was for her, I thought with jealousy.

He said nothing to me when he got in, he only nodded when I greeted him.

An hour into the trip, the car stopped.

Five minutes later, I got to understand that the car had developed some faults and the mechanic was on his way to have it looked at.

Carl asked that we get something to eat while waiting for the car to be fixed.

While we were eating, the driver called to inform us that the car would have to be worked on in the automobile workshop and it won’t be ready to move until 9pm.

Carl not wanting late night road trip decided we lodge in a nearby hotel, when we got to the only hotel available on that street, only one room was available.

I didn’t want to be in the same room with Carl anymore, I knew I was with him last night, I knew last night wasn’t the first night we have spent together, but I didn’t want to be in the same room with him any longer.

This man was my boss.

I was indebted to him.

he has a fiancée.

He doesn’t even care about me.

I needed to stop thinking about him.

But that could wait because tonight, I had no choice.

We lodged and moved to our room, I took the bathroom first and while Carl was I'm there, I decided to fall asleep before he came out.

The ringing of Carl's phone woke me up, after he took the call he announced that the car was outside and waiting whenever we are ready to leave.

It was 6:20 am and Carl's meeting was scheduled for 10:00am, we still had an hour trip ahead of us, plus breakfast to eat before then, so I hurried to wash off and get dressed.

While dressing up, my thoughts moved to my mom.

I should call her tonight, it's been a long while we spoke, I need to know if she was fine.

On second thought I decided since Carl was in the bathroom and I was almost done dressing, I could spare 5 minutes to call her, so I ringed her.

"Hello Mom, how have you been?"

"Jeez Melanie Adams, it's been so long, I've not been so good, Mark has been very ill for some time now, we are getting another set of test result to determine what could be the problem, Mel I'm worried"

Mark happens to be my step dad.

"Sorry Mom, I hope he gets better soon"

"Mel, he has changed, he isn't that proud man you think was trying to steal your mama"

"Mom, I have nothing against him, I have to go, do well to take care of yourself, send my love to Mark"

"Hang on Mel, have you found yourself a man?"

"Not that topic mom"

"Mel, you need to let go of what that son of a bitch did to you and move forward, move ahead Mel, stop preventing yourself from loving a man, not all men are cheat and liars"

"I know mom, I have to go now, I'd call you later, tell me what the doctor says"

"Bye Mel"

I felt a tear forming as I disconnect the call, I hope Mark gets better, my mum had gone through so much during my dad's last days, I don't want her to go over the same thing with Mark.

"Ready?"Carl's voice behind me brought me back from my thoughts.

"Yes boss, I'm ready"

"Good"

Is it a miracle that Carl didn't make a move at me?

We had breakfast before we continued our trip, we made it in time for the meeting as well.

After the meeting was over, we had lunch before driving down to the hotel Andrea was using for her wedding.

"Melanie, I'm so glad to see you, I didn't know you were coming, there is a little problem, all rooms are booked except Mr Mason's room, I don't know what we are going to do"

Oh not again, don't tell me I'd be sharing a room with this man yet again

"I could find another hotel around here"I consoled myself

"I'm so sorry dear, please take care, thakes again for coming"

"Congratulations Andrea, good night"

I didn't know where Carl had gone to but I figured his driver must have moved his things to his room, so I decided to go back to where the car was packed and wait for the driver there, so I could get my things and head out to a hotel around.

While waiting by the car, I searched hotels around me on my map, luckily I found one around and for a considerable price.

The driver arrived and after sharing with him the situation, he offered to drive me down to the hotel I discovered

I checked in and had just finished taking my bath when my phone rang

"Hello Mel, the doctor gave the results, sorry I forgot to ask how you are doing" my mom said immediately I picked the call, her voice sounded sad

"Mom I'm fine, what did the doctor say?" I asked curiously

"Well, he said there is a tumor growth and they'll need to observe him"

"Don't worry ma, he will be fine, you should get some rest"

"Thank you Mel, I'm glad we are in touch at this point, I need you to not stop calling me, okay?"

"Don't worry mom, I'm here for you, I love you, let me know if you need anything"

"Thanks Mel, I love you too, Good night"

I threw myself on the bed and closed my eyes, just then there was a knock on the door.

Who could that be? I didn't order room service

I opened the door only to find Carl standing and looking at me like I had gone missing but was now found.

Why can't this man just leave me alone?

“Good evening boss, how may I help you?”

“Why did you move to another hotel away from everyone without telling me, if not for the driver that informed me, I wouldn’t have known you were far away”

“Why do I need to tell you? Why pretend like you care about me. Oh you want to be sure I’m safe because of the debt I owe you”

“Stop being dramatic, I do care about you”

Was I dreaming or did I hear Carl say he cares about me

“What do you want?’

“Pack your things, I’ve paid for the suite, let’s move there”

“I’m not going anywhere with you, I paid for this room and this is where I would be spending the night, good night Mr Mason”

I said and tried to close the door, but he stopped the door with his hand

“Okay that’s fine, but so you’ll know, I already checked you out of this room, so someone else is on his way to this room already, except you don’t mind spending the night with a stranger who is probably a serial killer or an assassin or a kidnapper or maybe a rapist”

Gosh, I hate this man so much.
