Chapter 9 They Were Done

He blamed himself for leaving Greta alone in the bustling square. She was so little and dependent on her parents...

The weak little figure was engulfed by the sea of people. In front of her eyes, her father abandoned her without looking back and turned a deaf ear to her cry...

Kolton silently covered his chest and crumpled his clothes. The pain was like a hammer striking his heart. It hurt like hell.

Mixed with painful panting, his breathing became heavy.

Elyse's stiff eyelids moved. She turned around mechanically and looked at the man coldly.

"Kolton, I have been disillusioned with you a long time ago. Greta is my only spiritual ballast, and you hurt her for a nonexistent figure."

"I..." Kolton opened his mouth, but his voice would not come out. His face looked pale and feeble.

At the same time, panic rose in him.

At the sight of her cold, distant expression, he believed that... she would step away farther and farther until she disappeared from his world.

His heart was flustered, and he had an urge to grasp something.

As he remained silent, Elyse was mentally exhausted and mad. All of a sudden, she smacked him and barked, "If something happens to my daughter, I'll fight you till death."

"Elyse..." Kolton panicked, trying to explain.

Her eyes reddened as she cut him short, stressing each word, "Kolton, let's get divorced."

"Divorce?"

Kolton looked at her and froze there.

This word had been brought up a million times before. Somehow at that moment, it cut deep into his skin like a sharp knife.

What was under that layer of disguise?

He was not aware that the crimson was spreading quickly in his eyes and causing burning pain.

The thought of his torture every night sent a shiver down her spine, and she held her breath.

She instinctively stepped back. The fear made her skin crawl.

Somehow, a spot at the bottom of her heart was still expecting feedback that she had been longing for.

Kolton suddenly stretched out his arm and clamped her jaw fiercely. His knuckles turned pale as if he were going to crush her.

The pain instantly awakened the tenacity in her heart.

She stopped retreating and resisting. As he pinched her, she looked fiercely straight into that pair of crimson eyes.

Kolton smirked sarcastically. His voice was thick with menace, "Ms. Padilla, you're no longer worried about SE? Divorce? You'll have it as long as you can afford the plummet of the stock price and impeachment from the board of the directors."

As soon as his voice died away, he suddenly loosened his grip, flung her aside, pulled out a handkerchief from his chest pocket, wiped his hand carefully, and threw it into the trash can.

Elyse staggered and felt a tearing pain all over.

But her heart was numb.

And the pain was nothing.

"SE, heh..."

She chuckled as if nothing in this world mattered anymore. Raising her head, she faced his sneer.

"You think nothing of your family business. Why should I care?"

She looked away from the man, gazed at the emergency room where Greta was lying, and laughed, "Divorce! After four years of torment, it's time for an end."

They were finally done...
