I couldn't believe it-I wasn't an idiot, and that wasn't the best time to be throwing money away-but it happened. Someone took our money, and even if I wanted more of it, I wouldn't go back to the house I used to live in with the pack. It was impossible for me to do that. If I were to step inside that pack even once more, they would put an end to me right away.
I just couldn't help but feel bad for Evelyn because her life wasn't always so difficult; I mean, she wasn't exactly living the high life, but neither was it that bad either. Her home was not particularly remarkable.
I saw how terrified she was, and when she started crying heavily, I was helpless to do anything other than hug her tightly and try to calm her down by saying, "Please, sweetheart, don't cry. This problem will be resolved by me. Don't worry, I'll do everything in my power to find a decent job and a home for us both. Don't worry about it."
I thought she was going to pass out, so I kept kissing her cheeks. I was deeply killed emotionally, and I was lost, and I hated to promise her something that I wasn't sure if I was able to do or not. She didn't stop crying for even a second.
I heaved a sigh and then made the decision to be more truthful with her. She was, after all, my true mate, and she had some ability to read what I was thinking, so there was no way I could lie to her, especially in that terrible unknown situation.
As a result, I made the decision to be completely honest with her about what was going through my head. "Listen, Evelyn. It's time for a serious conversation. This is not a simple roadblock to get around."
My solemn demeanor was successful in drawing her attention to me; she eventually stopped crying, looked at me with her stunning and endearing eyes, and nodded while saying, "yes, please be honest. Tell me your plans. What course of action should we take at this moment? What if we didn't find any work in the near future? I mean, we were only required to pay for one night at that filthy inn. Should we get on our knees and start a fight with them until they return our money?"
After all, she was a naiive and a simpleton at heart.
I sighed, feeling numb and heartbroken at the same time, and said, "unfortunately, I can't fight them. Because I am a criminal, I have to conceal myself, which is why we are here. What if they rounded up the lone wolves in the pack, launched an investigation into my background, and uncovered the secrets I've been keeping about myself?"
After I had finished explaining the difficult circumstances, she immediately began sobbing once more.
To get her to stop crying, I had to kiss her lips, and thankfully, that technique was successful.
Then I distanced myself from the situation and said, "Well, we have to resolve this issue for the time being. I have a longtime friend who lives in this Pack, and to the best of my recollection, he is employed by the alpha of the green warriors' pack. I am going to go see him tomorrow morning and ask him to find me a job and a house, or even just a room for us to stay in for the time being."
She was able to calm herself to some extent, but then she turned to me and asked, "But how are we going to go to him? We don't have a single cent! You are aware that I have already forgotten my purse inside the house. I do not possess anything other than..."
After pausing for a moment, she looked down at the wedding ring that had been given to her the previous evening.
I took a deep breath to calm my nerves and shook my head in disagreement as I said, "no, surely not. Not your wedding ring. Please."
She grabbed my hand and then said, "We need to sell our rings as soon as possible. And if we change our minds, we can always get new wedding rings. That's the only thing that can bring in some cash for us right now."
When I started to say no, her sleepy voice said, "We need to eat something and then go down and search for a jewelry shop to sell them for now. In addition, it's possible that we'll need to go shopping for new clothes. Take a look at our clothing; it's soiled. These clothes are not appropriate for attending any kind of job interview!"
I blinked, feeling very confused. Have I understood that correctly? She said us? "What exactly do you mean when you refer to us? I mean, I did promise that I would look for work, right? Not you. You are not required to do anything other than wait for me inside the house while you are there. You didn't get used to working!"
But even then, she pulled me to the bed, opened the metal box, and said, "let's eat for now. I am so worn out that I don't want to discuss anything right now. Could we, for the time being, refrain from thinking?"
That was one area in which she was correct. We still need to get some more rest and will think about it in the morning.
But before I could do that, I had some other obligations.
It was an emergency for me to go sell the rings and then call my old friend, but I didn't want to leave her in the room by herself this time because I didn't want her to feel uncomfortable. It turned out that this inn was not a safe place to stay, and I regret not listening to her advice to spend the night in a nice hotel rather than a dump like this one.
While we were eating the meal, I came close to coercing her into finishing a few bites, but she hadn't been hungry enough to eat anything. After I had finished eating, I looked at her and kissed her hands before saying, "Listen, let's wear our clothes and go shopping for new clothes now. In addition to that, I have to get in touch with my close friend and sell the rings."
She rejected the idea by shaking her head and saying, "no, I just need to sleep for now. I need you to leave so that I can have some time to myself. Please."
The way in which she pleaded made it clear to me that I ought not to be demanding or pressing her in any way.
After a short while of rest, she came over to me and handed me her ring, saying, "Please take this."
I glared at the fact that she was in so much pain, but there was no other way out. I heaved a sigh, and then I made her the following promise: "I promise you that sooner rather than later, I will buy you a better wedding ring and a huge house, and we will officially become mated."
She gave me a bear hug and I kissed her on the neck before leaving the room. I felt guilty for everything that happened and the suffering that she had to endure with me even though she was the main reason behind this; if she weren't the most beautiful she-wolf in the kingdom, I wouldn't have killed the alpha.'
As I was leaving the inn, all of a sudden, a few warriors yelled in my direction and commanded me, "YOU! WAIT. YOU ARE BEING DETENTION FOR A CRIME THAT YOU HAVE COMMITTED."
What?!
