Chapter 7 : Samoa Theo

Bab..’

Gershom’s attempt to utter a word was cut off by the loud cracking sound of the ceramic vase as it smashed against the tiled floor near his feet.

A few hours had passed since their return from the hospital where he had taken her to have her wounds treated. Since they had returned, Yolanda had not stopped yelling and cussing at the top of her voice. Each time Gershom tried to get a word in, she cut him off by smashing random objects to the floor.

Gershom looked around at the mess hopelessly. Barely a week had passed since they had moved into their new love nest in the affluent suburbs, yet it already looked like a war zone. All the decorative ornaments lay on the floor, in pieces. He could not help but grit his teeth and rub the back of his neck. The ornaments had cost quite a lot.

‘Babe what? What are you going to say? What will you do to make this go away? That woman humiliated me! Look, look at this!’ She grabbed her tablet and shoved it to his chest. The video of her getting beaten had gone viral.‘What will you do to make this right? How do I ever show my face to the public again?’

‘Babe I’m sorry….’

‘Your sorry is not good enough!’

‘I will fix this.’

‘Really how? My image and reputation have already been dragged through the mud. How will your sorry fix all this!’ She pointed at her swollen face and the stitches above her eye.

‘Yolie, calm down. I promise I will make it up to you. Look, you can pick any car from the showroom..."

‘No, that won’t do.’

‘No?’ He looked at her in disbelief. She had been throwing subtle hints at him about him getting her a car. For her to turn him down just like that, without batting an eye was mindboggling.

‘No,’ she affirmed and went to seat on the three-seat, Italian leather sofa and rested her arm on the sofa’s back.

‘If you don’t want the car…’

‘You said you would fix this right?’

‘Yes, I will get her to apologize publicly…’

‘Just? No. That is not enough compensation.’

‘Ok, say what you want to happen and I will do it.’

‘Well, what do you think I want to happen Gershom? I want you to prove once and for all, whose side you are on.’

‘Yolie babez, haven’t I already shown you how much I love you? I am here with you, right? I don’t even know how mom is doing.’

Yolanda scoffed. ‘If you want my honest opinion, she was being overly dramatic,’ she said indifferently while studying her nails. ‘Anyway,’ she continued when she saw the displeased look on his face,’ You better get going, the police station is just three roads from here.’

‘The police station…?

Yolanda raised a perfectly curved brow at him. ‘Why do you have a problem with that?’

Gershom shook his head vehemently, putting a smile on Yolanda’s face. The twenty-one-year-old smirked at him and stood up. ‘Good. I will go take a shower and rest for a bit. By the way, I like the Mitsubishi ASX; I hope it comes with a chauffeur.’

Gershom stared at her speechless. Had she not just told him, she did not want the car?

‘Let me know when you have good news for me,’ she called over her shoulder.

At the hospital, Theodora could only stare at the pebbled ground in the car park and apologize profusely to the family for putting Mrs Chomba’s life in danger. The Chomba’s, however, refused to accept her apology because as far as they were concerned, the only person at fault was one of their own, Gershom.

‘You don’t have to feel guilty about anything,’ Joseph Chomba the first, a stocky dark man, with a friendly face said. ‘Your Ma will be fine. Feggy is lucky to have a sister to stand up for her like that, but please next time try to restrain yourself huh? What if that woman had done something bad to you?’

Theo nodded her head solemnly.

Chuckling, Kangwa wrapped her arms around Theo. “Oh Pa, you underestimate her. You forget she used to be our street champion when we were growing up. We never lost a street brawl because of her. Other kids didn’t dare mess with us because we had Samoa Theo; apparently, my dear brother forgot that.’

Despite her tiny body frame, the fearless Theo could take on people thrice her body size.

Her father frowned at her. ‘Kangwa enough, don’t go encouraging her. We should be grateful nothing serious came out of this.’

Kangwa sobered up but couldn’t resist giving her a discreet thumbs-up. While they were still talking, a Ford Ranger drove up. Feggy and Gershom’s two elder brothers hurried out. On seeing his youngest daughter in law, Joseph senior sighed relieved. Since she had woken up, the only person his wife had been interested in seeing was Feggy.

Feggy hurriedly greeted her father in law before rushing inside with Dr Henry Chomba, the eldest twin.

Watching his worried youngest daughter in law hurry into the hospital to be by his wife’s side, Joseph senior realized that something about his youngest son’s life was not adding up.

‘Theodora?’

‘Yes, pa?’

‘That money that is always credited in my account every fourth month, would you happen to know where it comes from?’

Caught unawares, she could only stare at him sheepishly.

Even though Feggy’s in law lived in their own house and did not have to pay rentals, and even though they owned another house that helped them with their daily expenses after they had both retired, their children had agreed that they would take care of their parents in their old age. The children had picked on a month that one would credit their parents account with money.

But since Yolanda, Gershom had stopped sending money to his parents. It was for this reason that Feggy had stopped sending the kids over for weekends and holidays. How could she be shameless and send her children over when her husband had long stopped contributing to his own parent's upkeep?

To cover up for Gershom, Feggy had asked her sister to step in and promised to pay her back someday. Theo had turned down her offer to pay her back and gladly stepped in where Gershom had failed because of her, Mr and Mrs Chomba were like her second parents.

‘The fourth? Isn’t that Gershom’s turn to take care of the expenses?’ Joseph junior, JR, the second twin asked.

‘Ummm I thought so too. But with everything that I have learned today, I just realized our son’s lack of character knows no bounds.’

‘I’m sorry. Please don’t be mad at Feggy. She was just trying to uphold Gershom’s imagine.’

‘Eish, that sister of yours is too much. Even after all that he has done to her, she was still worried about upholding his image in front of the family,’ Kangwa lamented.

‘Joseph.’

‘Yes dad?" answered JR.

‘If you have money on you, reimburse Theo for the money she has being crediting to my account.’

‘Oh, there is no need to…’

‘The responsibility of taking care of our parents solely lies on Gershom’s shoulders, not the two of you. If Feggy keeps shielding him like this, he will never grow up,’ JR said.

‘Why don’t you use that money to spoil my grandchildren? And you tell Feggy I expect to see the kids over for the weekend.’
