The sound was the first thing she heard - slow, steady, almost human.
Then came the smell of antiseptic. White light. The hum of distant machinery.
Stephanie's eyelids fluttered open. The ceiling above her wasn't chrome or fractal - it was plaster, painted cream, lit by the cold flicker of fluorescent bulb
