Zevara's POV

You," he mouthed.

I glanced up at the man in front of me, and his brows furrowed in shock, then slowly his cold expression vanished into thin air, replaced by a gentle smile curling up in his lips.

Not the lustful one I have received. No. This one was genuine. More beautiful than I have ever seen. And I didn't realize when my lips curled into a smile too. I could say this is the first time I had smiled genuinely in my entire life-since there has been nothing fun going on in my life to smile about.

My heart raced. Not from nervousness or fear. But from what I believe was love.

I had never believed in love at first sight. But lust? Obsession? That, I could understand.

"We are ready to leave," he added.

The captain's eyes shifted back to me. "I have to go," he said quickly, still watching me like he didn't want to. "I believe we will meet some other time."

My lips parted. I wanted to tell her about him. Tell her about the man that makes sin seem like salvation, that blurs out the difference with love and lust, but I decided against it. I want to be sure he feels the same way before I tell her.

"No one. Just excited to be here," I replied, still smiling.

Her eyes narrowed, and her lips pouted, but she nodded slowly. "Fine. You can't have another best friend besides me, Zev," she joked, extending her pinky.

I had thought Nina would have outgrown this behavior, but it seems it's still very much part of her. She is fond of being jealous of friendship. Like she's jealous when I make other friends.

She's so strange, isn't she?

"Sure. Best friends till we become grannies." I hooked mine.

We both burst into laughter.

Nina slung her arm across my shoulders. "Come, let me introduce you to my cheerleading members. Would you like to join?"

Cheerleading?

Initially I didn't want to join, but since that guy is the captain, I'm in.

"Really?" Nina raised her brow, surprised. "I legit thought you were going to reject it. Give excuse about studying like you always do."

Inside, the practice room was filled with heavy glances and stares. Nina had introduced me to over eight of the ladies whose names I can't remember.

Okay, I'm smart, but I'm dull when it comes to memorizing faces and names.

One of the ladies extended the application form to me, but before I could take it, she left it, and it dropped on the floor.

Really.... I glanced up, and all the ladies were exchanging mocking stares. I don't need a soothsayer to tell me that I am not welcomed here either.

I picked up the form and filled in my name.

I walked up to the lady from earlier. "Here." I extended the form to her but dropped it before she could take it.

Nina tried to teach me some of the steps-which I grabbed a few. Then she handed me a super tight uniform-red and blue.

"We will continue the rehearsals next week when the ice hockey team gets back from their match," Nina finally says. "Let's hope they win."

The ladies all nodded, glaring at me as they walked out of the room.

"Thanks so much, Nina," I said as we stepped into the grand living room.
