Chapter 2 II

Damien Point of view

My lips split into a smile when I heard her melodious voice.

"Hello Damien! Where are you? You didn't come home last night. I hope I have not disturbed you?"

I chuckled at her sweet yet hesitant voice.

"Where would I be? Of course, in the office. I told you, right, that I have some unfinished business at work, and yes, my love, you can never disturb me."

"Oh! I totally forgot you told me that. I got worried when you didn't answer my calls and messages last night," her gloomy voice reached my ears, and I closed my eyes in frustration.

"I am sorry, love. You know that I will never do it intentionally. I just got so busy that I lost track of time. But sweetie, I feel like something else is bothering you. You aren't sounding well."

I waited for a few minutes before I heard her voice again, filled with disappointment.

"Yesterday was our first wedding anniversary, damien."

Fuck!

It's one year already?

So fast

I had no idea.

"I am genuinely sorry, love. I don't know how it just slipped out of my mind. I am such an idiot. You must have done lots of preparation and hard work to make our day memorable and must be waiting for me, and I spoiled everything like always," I ranted while running a hand through my hair.

"It is completely okay, Damien. I know you have such big responsibilities on your shoulders. It was just an anniversary. We have been each other's companions for a year now. Do you really think we need any particular day to celebrate our love for each other? As long as we are together, every day is special for me."

My heart softened on hearing her voice.

It was so full of innocence and love.

Is she for real?

Maybe this is her only quality that makes her different from others.

I walked toward the shelf, carried a mini-bar bottle, and made myself a drink.

"Thank you, Esmeralda. Thank you so much for coming into my life. I don't know what I would have done without you. But I assure you that I will make it up to you tonight."

"Damien, I told you right! You don't-"

I interrupted her gently,

"I will do it because I want to, not because I need to. I love you, precious."

I caressed the edges of the glass and smiled, knowing deep down that I was finally heading in the right direction...towards making things right with her.

"I love you too, Damien. Come back soon," she whispered softly before ending the call.

I kept the phone on the table and walked over to the window to take in the view of the busy streets of San Francisco.

"I must have done some good things in my past life to get such an understanding wife," I muttered with a smile, and then I burst into quiet laughter.

"Well, that was quite easy, Damien."

One year ago, everyone laughed at my decision. They told me I was a fool to marry someone like Esmeralda. Someone who neither belonged to my world nor matched my status. A girl too innocent for the chaos I lived in.

But I knew.

I knew from the very first day that she was everything I needed in a wife.

A girl who worships me like God, a girl who, like a dutiful wife, takes care of my every need yet never messes with my personal life.

A chuckle escaped my lips as I raised my hand for a toast.

"Cheers to my understanding wife."
