"Don't speak, Eve. You need rest." Seeing Eve in such a state, Lucas had no intention of listening to her. He took a step forward and tried to comfort her.
"Don't touch me!" Eve recoiled abruptly, and her head bumped the wall hard. But she seemed numb to the pain. Her fingers unconsciously scratched her arm to force herself to stay awake. "You and Alina... have you been in cahoots all along?"
Lucas watched Eve's self-harming behavior and frowned. "Eve, stop it."
He stepped forward to stop her, but Alina blocked him.
"Let her be," Alina sneered. "She's clearly made, isn't she? Eve, you still don't know, do you? Lucas and I have been together for a long time. Just as you started dating, he quickly confessed his love to me. He never had feelings for you. He just toyed with you. You're just like a free whore to him."
Eve suddenly halted and lifted her head with a rare clarity in her eyes directed at Lucas.
"Why, why are you treating me like that?" Eve erupted into a piercing scream, grabbed the glass on the bedside, and hurled it heavily against the wall.
The glass shattered, and a shard grazed her cheek, which started bleeding.
"Eve!" Lucas rushed forward, but Eve stopped him by swinging her arms frantically.
"Liars! You're all liars!" Eve cried hysterically. She put one glass shard against her wrist. "I'd rather die than see you again."
Lucas's heart nearly stopped beating. He'd never seen Eve so resolute.
"Put the glass down," he said in a demanding tone, and his voice trembled with fear.
Alina, however, laughed coldly. "Let her do it. Once Eve is dead, we can finally get married."
"Shut up!" Lucas yelled at Alina. He turned sharply to her, and his eyes burned with rare fury.
Alina was stunned by his reaction and momentarily speechless.
Lucas held Eve tightly, ignoring her biting and kicking until she gradually calmed down.
"Why, why did you treat me like this..." she murmured, and tears silently ran down. "I loved you so much. You said you'd only love me in your life. Why are you marrying Alina?"
Lucas's arms froze. "I wanted to offer you a better life, Eve. Why can't you be a little more understanding?"
He stood up and closed his eyes briefly.
"Call a doctor to treat her wounds," he said to the caregiver at the door. "And keep a close watch on her tonight. Don't let her do anything foolish."
Eve closed her eyes.
She had supported Lucas for five years. She helped him clear obstacles and, step by step, ascend as a district leader in the mafia. She had long repaid Lucas for saving her life five years ago.
Everything was about to end.
"She's already gone mad. Why do you bother with a lunatic? Let's go, Alina."
Lucas urged Alina to leave once more.
Alina continued to boast, and her finger almost poked Eve's face. "Stop clinging to Lucas.
Otherwise, you will die when Lucas and I get married. With just one word from me, my father, Mr. Costa, will let you die a miserable death."
Just as the words left her mouth, the door to the room burst open.
A dozen suited men stormed in and surrounded Lucas and Alina.
Both of them were stunned.
Robert, the mafia boss, entered the room. His gaze fell on Alina and Lucas, and his voice was dignified. "Who dared to claim that I will let my only daughter, Eve Costa, die a miserable death?"
