"Hey, I didn't see you leave the event yesterday. What happened?" It was my best friend, Maddie.
"You know I'm not a morning person." I snapped.
But she merely ignored my tone and went on. "I'm bored at home. I'm coming over. Better be up and out by the time I get there."
"You're..." But she ended the call before I could complete my statement.
Calling her bluff about coming to visit me, I dropped the phone back on the drawer and went back to cuddling my pillow, drifting back to my dreamland where I had two identical looking alphas pampering and spoiling me rotten.
A hard knock came on my door, startling me awake for the second time that morning.
It could be only Ever who knocked like a mad person on my door. She usually barged into it without knocking but would get angry if I didn't knock on hers.
So I had to start locking my door to ensure she also knocked whenever she wanted to come into my private space.
I wanted to ignore the knock and continue sleeping but she would not allow me, the raps were getting incessantly annoying.
"I'm coming." I snapped.
When I opened the door, I came face to face with my evil twin sister. "Yes?"
"Maddie is waiting for you downstairs." She all but sneered.
"Please tell her to come up." I said.
She curled a side of her lips upward. "And who's your slave, stupid?" She eyed me. "Why are you still wearing your mask, weirdo?"
I touched my face. Dang it! I had no idea I'd slept with it. "Nothing. Goodbye." I slammed the door in her face and locked it before she'd barge in, ranting like some diseased pup.
"How dare you do that?!" She yelled from behind the door. "Wait till I tell our parents what you just did to me."
"Sorry." I called out my apology, knowing our parents were going to support her and punish me for it.
I walked over my bedside drawer, picked up my phone to call Maddie to come up.
I peeled off my mask and undressed, wrapped my towel firmly around my body. I still felt sore in between my legs but the memory of how I'd gotten it had me smiling foolishly.
I had left when they had been sound asleep. I couldn't risk them seeing my face, not just yet. I was happy I'd found my mates but I didn't know how I felt about them coming to see my parents.
Maybe it was the fact that Ever would find a way to cause trouble and paint me in a bad light. I didn't want my mates witnessing the bad blood between my twin sister and me.
"Open up, Emma." Maddie rapped gently on the door.
"Wait for me while I freshed up." I invited her in.
I rushed into the bathroom and within twenty minutes, I was out again, dressed and very much awake.
"So tell me, when did you leave the party and why did you?" She began her questions.
Eager to tell my best friend, I started. "I was at the masked party. Moments later, Ava began to prance in my head, causing me some discomfort..." I went on to tell her everything, not leaving even a single detail out of it.
"What the hell?!" Maddie was in awe, the stunned look on her face had me grinning. "So you found your mates, almost got raped, witnessed the gruesome death of your near-rapist and had your virginity taken by your mates, all in one night?"
"I guess you could sum it up like that." The grin was still plastered on my face.
"Oh my goodness! What a delightfully eventful night you've had! I so envy you, girl." She squealed, happy for me.
"I know right? The Moon Goddess sure does work in mysterious ways." I said, still reeling by what had happened last night.
Ava purred in my head.
"I know, Ava. I'm missing them too." I replied through our telepathic link every werewolf was born with.
It was the only way to communicate with our wolves and they with us.
"So when are they going to come whisk you away to your new home?" There was a teasing twinkle in her eyes.
Excitement died down to worry and wariness. My grin vanished from my face, giving way to a confused frown.
My best friend saw this and knitted her brows too. "What is it? Was the sex not to their liking?"
"It's not that." I chewed my lower lip. "It's just...you know they offered to get me home but I refused. I left around midnight, say one or two am."
"What are you scared about?" She patiently and calmly asked.
"You know how Ever is.. I'm scared she would ruin things for me. If they come visiting, she might try to do something... anything to make my mates hate me. You know how Ever can be."
"Hey.." She held my hand, her voice soothing and comforting. "...you can not let your twin sister stop you from getting what you want. What has been given to you by the Moon Goddess. You know, the Moon Goddess has seen how much you have suffered in the hands of your family and this is her way of making you happy. Don't let this opportunity pass you by simply because you're scared of what your family, especially your twin sister thinks."
"I wish it was as easy as you make it seem, Maddie. Ever can go to any length, she scares me a lot and the fact that my parents just seem to believe everything she says isn't helping me too." I chewed my lower lip harder.
I didn't want to lose this opportunity but I also wasn't sure I wanted my mates to come visiting when Ever was home.
My parents would definitely show respect and honor to the two most powerful werewolves to exist, and they might even want to warm up to me just for favors and all.
But Ever was quite the conniving, little witch the Moon Goddess has cursed me with.
She was evil and manipulative, was perfect for deception and lies. She could weave them in ways I'd never seen anyone do.
I wasn't sure I wanted my mates to witness that, neither was I sure I wanted Ever anywhere around them.
"Is it possible to run away to live with them?" I suddenly asked.
Maddie took one look at me and burst into laughter.
My frown deepened. "What's funny? I only asked a question."
"That was a ridiculously stupid question, Emma. Where have you ever heard that is being done? That is downright a shameful act. If the Alphas are sensible enough, they'll understand the norms guiding marriages and how it must never to broken. As leaders, they should know this and are expected to uphold it. I'm sure that's why they were eager to drop you off this morning, if only you'd agreed."
"And let Ever bring her evilness into play? No, I couldn't risk it." I shook my head, not feeling any ounce of regret for not letting them bring me home this morning.
She heaved a sigh. "So what do you propose? You want to leave your alphas hanging? Not let them think you're serious or something?"
A new kind of worry twisted my insides. Unable to sit any longer, I got up to pace. "I don't know."
"I have an idea." Maddie spoke.
"Oh, really? Please tell me." I stopped pacing to face her.
"What if I find a way to get Ever out of the house while the Alphas come visit and they leave before Ever gets back?" She suggested.
A small smile broke through my worry as her plan sank. "That's not a bad idea. Thank you so much, Maddie. You're the best."
A knock sounded on my door just then. "What do you want, Ever?"
"Open the door, Emma." It was my dad and his tone was serious.
"Uh-oh." Maddie muttered.
I swallowed nervously. Uh-oh indeed.
What lies had Ever gone to spill this time? I trudged to the door and opened to meet my father's serious face. "We need to talk now."
