Chapter 4 Four. Our goal

Four. Our goal

Ravena:

Vernon Draven. The Rogue.

I wanted to shout, yell and scream. That was what I was supposed to do but, I didn't know why....I just couldn't. I only looked at him. Into his emerald green eyes that were quite magnetic. The rumors weren't lies. They weren't just rumors. He did have a beautiful set of eyes.

"You don't seem scared...in the slightest" he said. His voice which was deep as hell, resonated throughout my whole body, stirring something within me. I can't believe that even in this sea of pain, my mind was messing with me.

"Vernon Draven" I called his name. My voice was a loud whisper, the shock evident in my tone.

"What a good memory you have there"

"What...are you doing here?"

He arched a brow with a slight smirk playing at the edge of his lips. He walked closer to the pillar and held me by my waist, ignoring my question. He tore the ropes that bound me to the pillar, melting them to ashes immediately. Thanks to his hand that held me, if not, I would have slumped to the ground.

"What are you doing here?" I asked again.

"If I told you, that I came here for you...would that answer the question?"

I was speechless. I didn't know what to say. Why would he come for me? We aren't close. We were never close.

I raised my head to look at him, our face closer than socially acceptable. I swallowed and wanted to slip away. But he didn't let go.

"You can't be here".

"Oh, I can be anywhere I choose love" he said.

He must've have noticed my protest in his arms because with that smirk on his face, he pulled the messy strands on my face away, tucking them neatly behind my ear and then led me to the chair that Roberts had been sitting on. I allowed myself to sit. His actions were too voluminous for me to take so, I just allowed myself to sit.

His hands rested into his pockets while his gaze was on me. And so was mine on him. A minute passed in silence.

"I came for you Rae..." he called me.

My brows furrowed. "Don't call me like you know me".

"Oh, yes I do love. I know you more than you can ever imagine".

Rae was too intimate. We weren't on first name terms but he was already making his way through.

"Why have you come for me?" I asked him.

"Join me Rae. I need you".

"What? Why--?"

"You're the last piece on the puzzle. You just need to join me" he said to me.

I tried to form words but nothing was coming out. His words were tying my tongue. Last piece on his puzzle? Like what does he take me for?!

"You lost your family and I know you feel like shit. You want revenge, don't you Rae?"

"Huh?"

"As you know, I used to be a member of this pack, but, I was banned and I went rogue"

"Yeah...what does that have to do with me?"

His gaze turned murderous in an instant causing my heart to latch hard against my ribcage. This man is dangerous, I reminded myself.

"I want revenge on the Moonfang pack and I'm sure you want that too, because of your family. You really don't believe what was said about them right?"

I didn't reply.

"Or do you? Your father will be very disappointed".

"Don't talk like you know me or my people".

"Maybe I do. I know everything Rae. And you have no choice but to join me. If not, day after day, night after night, you will keep wishing you died".

"Is that a threat?" He was using my weakness as his leverage. What a jerk!

"No, that's a fact. And you know that too".

"I won't join you. If I do, then I would be doing what my family was accused of. I will get my revenge in my own way".

"Alright. We'll see about that. But need me remind you Rae, you have nothing and that includes time".

I clenched my fists. He was right. If I wanted my revenge, staying here and groveling for these people wouldn't foot it.

"Why do you need me?" I asked again.

"Because we share the same goal" he was already sauntering down the stairs, leading to the entrance. He could have just left as he had come in.

"I don't believe you".

He looked at me. "Do you think it's because of what you are?"

"Is that not it?"

"That's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't need that. It's you, that I need" he said.

"Huh?"

"So, what do you say, Rae? Do we have a deal?"

I swallowed, my eyes resting on his outstretched palm. They looked so veiny and charming. But at this moment, it's as dangerous as it's beautiful.

"Let me...think about it" I said, raising my head to look at him. "I need to think this through...". I'm the last piece in his puzzle and he needed me. And maybe I need him too. I can't stay here forever. I'd rather he use me, than I stay here and eat the scraps of this people.

"Mm. You should. Whatever you choose Rae but, you only have until tomorrow".

And like that, he disappeared through the door. As soon as he left, I was back in my room at the omega grounds, the pain in my body gone including the whip marks. It was as if I hadn't been through an ordeal.

I was going to fret about being caught and all, but, remembering the man I was just with some minutes ago, I deduced, everything was under his control.

Vernon.

She said, she would think about it. And I gave her the grace of the next day. It's such a pain to see her in that state. Mr Betfang should have been careful...how could he have let himself be swept under the knife?

I took out a stick of cigarette and lighted. It's been eleven years since I Ieft that place. Two years ago, Orin suddenly mentioned it to me. And since then, I've had my eyes on it. To think so much time has passed... And today that I saw her... Rae wasn't looking her best at all.

"Vern, we got an invite this year too" Orin said to me from the passenger seat.

"That's great" I replied.

"Why do they keep sending us invites? They know we won't attend"

"They just want to save face".

"So, do we do the usual? Not attend?"

"No...we attend this time".

"Huh?"

"Yeah. We will be attending this year's own. There's still time. Have Thea prepare our tux".

"Tell me Vern, what are you thinking?"

I smiled at my friend. "Someone will be giving me an answer tomorrow".

"She spoke to you?"

"Of course she did". The thought of her in that state did nothing but prick my mind.

"Isn't that so...easy?"

"Even if she didn't agree, I will find a way to take her away from there Orin. I can't have her staying there anymore".

"So, if she agrees?"

"If she agrees, we would go according to plan".

"But, you really don't need her for your plan to work..."

"I can't have Mr. Betfang cursing me for letting her daughter suffer".

Not like I owed him anything. It's just... I don't know either. But, Rae can't stay there anymore.
