Madelynn's ex-girlfriend's face turned livid as she glared at me for a long moment. Then she said, "How shameless you are!"
Who was she complimenting?
"Who are you calling shameless?" A familiar voice sounded beside me. Madelynn had returned.
I immediately put on a pitiful expression, clutched a corner of Madelynn's shirt, and said with tears welling up in my eyes, "Honey, don't be mad. Even though she called me shameless, I believe she didn't mean it."
Look at me, who switched effortlessly between playing innocent and manipulative.
It was worth every bit of the 1.5 million dollars a month.
As expected, Madelynn felt sorry for me. He gave his ex-girlfriend a glare. "Leave. You're in my seat."
As he spoke, he pulled me into his embrace and soothed me gently. "Laurence, don't be upset. I'll stand up for you."
"Okay." I buried my face in Madelynn's chest aggrievedly and took the opportunity to touch him abs a bit. I'd long noticed he had abs, and indeed, they were quite impressive.
Madelynn tensed up momentarily but soon relaxed again.
Was he still inexperienced?
"Madelynn, did you really buy her a Panamera?" his girlfriend asked angrily.
I could answer that question for my boss. I looked up with a shy smile and pretended to have gained a lot. "Thanks to you for giving up on him. Otherwise, how would I ever get to drive such a luxury car? I'll treat you to dinner next time."
"You..." She stomped her foot angrily and muttered, "You disgraceful pair." Then she stormed off in tears.
"Do you have enough hugging?" Madelynn asked, ruffling my hair.
Of course, he knew I was acting, and he had played along with me perfectly.
I chuckled and let go of him. I watched as Madelynn sat down in front of me.
I couldn't resist my curiosity and asked, "Honey, what did she do to you?"
Madelynn poured himself a glass of water and said in a flat tone, "She saw I was rich and pursued me. Once we dated, she constantly asked me for gifts. Sometimes she asked for something luxurious. Just a month into our relationship, she dared to ask me to buy her a car. It was too expensive, but I had some financial issues at the time, so I joked about going bankrupt. She believed it and started being cold to me every day. It wasn't the first time she caused a scene. I have my limits, too. If she thinks I'm a fool, it is fine to break up with me. I didn't love her so much."
I barely heard what he said, only caught the expression like, "Blah blah... a car isn't too expensive... blah blah..."
"Laurence, wipe your drool."
I snapped back to reality and quickly grabbed a napkin to wipe my mouth.
Huh? He had me fooled!
But that was okay. It was all in romantic playfulness.
"She was treating you like an ATM, and you put up with it?" I said, siding with him.
Madelynn glanced at me and said with a faint smile. "You are right. So I don't want to be with her anymore. I've decided to find someone who openly sees me as an ATM. At least she'll provide good service."
"Of course, serving the boss is my duty," I said, patting my chest with pride.
"What did you call me?"
"Honey."
Madelynn took a sip of water and became satisfied. He tossed me a metaphorical bone. "If you perform well, I will continue the agreement between us."
What? So could the agreement be continued? Now I was more motivated.
I always kept my promises, so if I said I'd perform well, I meant it.
For the next month, I was on my best behavior.
Every morning, I greeted him with a "Good morning," and every night, a "Good night."
I kept in constant contact during the day, replying to him instantly. I left my phone on to answer his calls immediately at night.
I never missed a meal appointment.
Every day, I would eagerly wait outside the sales department on the 22nd floor.
Sometimes, I delivered breakfast or afternoon tea to Madelynn. Sometimes, I waited for him to have dinner.
We spent more time together than the time I spent sleeping.
Gradually, I learned some of Madelynn's preferences.
He liked milk tea, just a bit sweet.
In the evening, I waited for him with a freshly squeezed coconut juice again.
His colleagues from the 22nd floor were leaving one by one. They joked with me as usual.
"The young woman from the 20th floor is waiting for Madelynn again."
"Has she put on a bit of weight since last time?"
I rolled my eyes.
Could I be blamed?
Madelynn kept taking me to restaurants. I couldn't resist any delicious dishes.
"Laurence, are you waiting for Madelynn?" A gentle voice suddenly spoke beside me.
I turned around and found a familiar guy.
Oh! It was Maverick Hopkins.
I mistook him for my boyfriend last time, which made me quite famous on the 22nd floor.
"Yes." I nodded to him. Then I remembered how I had embarrassed him before and said apologetically, "Sorry for mistaking you last time."
"It's not your fault. Many people confuse me with Madelynn just from behind," Maverick said while laughing.
He spoke so gently, with a smile in every word. If I weren't so loyal to Madelynn now, he might have been my type.
What a shame!
"Laurence, Madelynn is in a meeting and might not be back soon. If you're tired of standing here, you can wait inside. There are still colleagues working overtime," Maverick said, patting my shoulder.
"It's okay. I'm not tired. I can wait here." I had no interest in sitting idly in another department.
Maverick and I chatted casually, but my thoughts had already drifted. I imagined how perfect this scene would be if Madelynn saw it. It would be a classic misunderstanding straight out of a romantic drama.
Just as the thought crossed my mind, a somewhat jealous voice came through. "Honey, do you mistake your boyfriend again?"
Ah, what an uncanny intuition I had!
