Meanwhile, Summer had returned to the living room. She tidied up her bag, then combed her curly hair with difficulty. Louis's little heart was moved to help. But once again, he ignored the intention.
Shortly after lying in the sleeping bag, Summer fell asleep. She occasionally scratched her neck. Seeing that, Louis worried again.
"Isn't it uncomfortable? She shouldn't be using a sleeping bag in a room like that."
As he kept staring at Summer, Louis was lost in thought. Slowly, he began to realize.
Although he hated what Summer had done, he couldn't blame her. Maybe the little girl was a tortured soul who missed her father, just like what he had been through with Emily, his twin.
After a while, Louis finally came out of the room. He ordered his servants to prepare the guest room. Then, he stood with a sad look at Summer. Her peaceful face reminded him of the past.
Back when their mother was still a single parent, he and Emily also longed for a father. They prayed every night that God would send an angel to be their father. Could Summer feel the same way?
"I'm not an angel, Summer. Why did you choose me? Why didn't you just find your biological father? Did Sky keep his identity a secret from you like my mother did? But why?" Louis pondered in silence.
"After all, he is your biological father. I'm sure he would love you if he knew you were his child. Sky should have learned from my mother's mistakes. Why did she follow in her steps?"
Again, Louis was lost in thought. He felt sorry for the toddler until, suddenly, a servant whispered to him, "Sir, the guest room is ready."
Louis blinked. He nodded faintly. "Thank you. You can go back to your rooms now."
"Do we still have to hide, Sir? Should we make dinner for the little lady? We peeked at her earlier. She only ate a piece of bread. Judging from the way she ate so heartily, it seemed like she was very hungry."
Louis looked at Summer's face again. Her tiny mouth was slightly agape.
"Just let her rest. She must be tired after a long journey. Tomorrow morning, just prepare a breakfast that children usually like."
"Okay, Sir."
After the servants returned to their rooms, Louis bent his knees. He studied Summer's face. Her chubby cheeks looked flushed red. Louis was increasingly convinced that she was feeling hot in the sleeping bag.
"Summer, when your eyes are closed like this, you look so much like your mother," Louis murmured before taking a deep breath. Unconsciously, his hand moved to stroke her curly hair.
"Why did your mother get involved with a man with gray eyes? People got the wrong idea because our eyes are the same," he whispered before falling into a sad thought.
In the silence, Louis' gaze shifted to the journal beside the backpack. He opened it. Many things were written there. The letters looked messier on the first page.
"Helo, my name is Summer. I am tree years old. My mother is Sky. My mother and I love to tarvel the wold. Sometimes, we go to visit Grandpa and Grandma. They love to tarvel too. We are an adventourous family."
Louis smiled at the spelling mistakes. The drawing of a woman and a little girl also looked cute there. Both of them were wearing hoodies, jumpsuits, and backpacks. Shaking his head in amusement, Louis checked other pages.
"Today, Mommy and I are leaving for France. Mommy said we will work as guids in a castel on the sea. I can't wait to see the place!"
"Mommy took me to visit Grandpa and Grandma in NZ. She said the sheep will have to be sheared soon. I wonder what the sheep will look like without their wol. They must be embarassed."
"I'm glad Mommy got to meet Ant Emily again. They are long-lost friends. Someday, I hope I can have a best friend too. I won't have to play alone anymore if I have a friend."
Louis' face suddenly turned grim. His thoughts were disturbed not by his twin's name, but by the fact that Summer longed for a best friend.
"Has she been lonely all this time?" he murmured softly. He couldn't deny the pain in his heart.
Suddenly, his phone rang. Worried that Summer would wake up, he quickly moved aside. His face was cloudy. However, when he saw who was calling, his eyes lit up again.
"Ace? Are you not mad at me anymore?" Louis sounded cheerful even though his voice was a bit lacking energy.
"Louis, I thought you had the kid handled. But why did you bring her to your penthouse?"
The light on Louis' face dimmed. He didn't expect his lover to make a big deal out of it.
"I needed to question her, and I didn't want any paparazzi to bother me. That's why I brought her to my penthouse. You know what, Ace? Turns out she's the daughter of Sky-Emily's best friend."
"You mean the old friend of yours?" Grace replied with emphasis.
Louis swallowed. He could sense her jealousy.
"Yeah. I didn't expect it either. Believe it or not, the kid came all alone from Canada. That's why I couldn't possibly abandon her. I let her rest at my place," he explained softly.
However, Grace got more irritated. Her voice raised, "You know that it could cause prejudice, right? Paparazzi might think all sorts of things. They would relate that child to your scandal!"
