Chapter 3 The Substitute Husband

Lindsey's POV

"What!" Adrian and Damian chorused as they shoved their gaze at their father.

That line came as a blow as it uplifted my spirit. I rolled my eyes at him; my heart felt at peace.

He was a man of few words, but then his declaration brightened my mood. I've got no man, but I could improvise.

I lazily directed my eyes at the door and found a little girl holding the hand of a young woman.

She was Adrian's spitting image, and I could see the love in his eyes for her; his lips curved like a smile.

That must be his wife and daughter. The sight of these two females made me turn pale.

"Dad!" Her little voice calls as she runs to embrace Adrian. He seems happy after ruining my life.

She kissed him on the cheek as Damian blew an invisible kiss at me. I froze where I sat.

I was losing my breath again as blurry images of Damian biting my collarbonesurfaced.

Then I felt his body on mine, naked, raw, and intensifying, his sweat and his growl like an animal, and my shrieking voice that got replaced by a moan.

His hot body rammed on mine as he kissed me deeply like he owns me.

My hand stretched out to Adrian, weeping that he should help, but all he did was make videos, laugh, and cheer up Damian.

My hands were shaking as tears clouded my eyes. I was suffocating, and the chats on the table never registered in my head.

He's so ridiculous, and I wish Dad had caught him doing that. I'd always hate him because he traumatized my teenage years.

If I were Adrian's daughter, would he have let Damian...argh! The memories were horrible.

I was in distress and angry, desiring to burn everyone gathered here, including my father.

The child left Adrian and waved at me before running over to Dad. His wife joined him where he sat and kissed him mildly on the lips.

The child's cheeks blush, and she compliments my beauty, telling that to Damian.

Seriously? Why, Damian? He winked an eye at me and then let out a wry smile.

I felt my blood pressure rise as I was restless.

I ignored the child, as all I thought about was destroying her father's ego. I must become the heiress.

Stressed, I rose up from the dining room even before his wife could introduce herself.

No one could stop me, or they just didn't want me in their midst. I must have bad luck, ruining the happy mood.

There was an outward show of apathy, while there was chaos in my mind, and I felt I'd go insane.

Annoyingly, I stepped out of the mansion, heading towards the garage, only to find Miguel.

He was right in front of me, and I was baffled.

I felt butterflies hovering around my stomach, my pulse was fast, and my dilated eyes were dazed by him.

My breath was slow as I paused along with time. I kept my chin raised and forced myself to breathe naturally.

Right there, I wished to embrace him, to weep in his arms. If there was only one person to understand me.

However, my heart shattered when I saw a gun beside him. I dried up where I stood, nervous and stuck at a crossroads.

Dad needed a groom, and he was suddenly walking out of the mansion. I could see him with his bouncers.

The dinner must be over, or he was just as bored as I was and decided to attend a meeting.

I trailed my eyes to the balcony and saw Damian staring below with a devious gaze. He looked serious, and our eyes locked.

I shifted my eyes from him and settled them on Miguel. Why wasn't he moving?

Did he send Miguel to kill Dad? I doubt it because he seems to be anticipating too.

Adrian must be back inside with his family. Father didn't notice as he was making a phone call, stomping in my direction.

One thing was certain: Miguel came right in time to save me, and he'd be my husband.

I was scared, but nevertheless, I needed a chance again.

It was left for him to play along or just shoot right there.

Miguel's POV

All it takes is one bullet, and she'd be dead. I was quite nervous, as though it was my first kill.

I never missed my target, and I was a legendary hitman.

My hands trembled as I could see her staring at me with heavy eyes like I was an alien.

The irony is that we had a one-night stand together, and the next day, I'd be shoving a bullet down her skull.

I swear it would be my last kill, but she was difficult to keep.

She was walking fast towards me, as though being chased by someone and frightened.

I arched my thumb on the trigger, almost raising the gun when she suddenly approached me and said,

"Marry me."

Her eyes were anxious. I had to hide the gun behind me, intrigued by the fierce look she gave me.

Her eyes expressed the pain and agony that she'd keep a secret.

"What?" I muttered, narrowing my gaze at her. That was so unexpected, and I couldn't tell why I was glued to a spot at the sight of her.

"Name your price," her lips further as she swiftly stuck a ring on her finger. There was just something about her that rendered me speechless and confused. Her eyes were pleading that I should play along.

It felt as though her life depended on it.

I tried to take it off immediately when her next line got me jinxed.

"Oh honey, you gave me a surprise visit! I love you!" She screamed, her eyes bright, but there were tears in them.

That smile was from a wounded soul. I could see a strand of tears drooling slowly from them.

I felt my heartache as my face turned pale. I was becoming sober.

Does she really smile this much?

My lips were shaky as I suddenly wished to hold her and wipe those tears away.

This was complicated. A bounty was laid on her head, and I'm her killer.
