Chapter 5 Five

Contract Marriage with Lucifer

Young Codex

Chapter Five

Jenny stood in front of the massive, gold-framed mirror, staring at her reflection.

The dress was too much.

It was a deep red, satin gown-backless, with a slit high enough to make her nervous. The fabric clung to her curves, and the plunging neckline made her self-conscious.

"This isn't a dress," she muttered, adjusting the straps. "This is a trap."

Behind her, the stylist-a middle-aged woman with a sharp eye-sighed. "You look breathtaking. Stop fidgeting."

Jenny exhaled. It wasn't the dress that made her uncomfortable.

It was the fact that she had to stand beside Leo all night, pretending to be in love with him.

And worst of all? Julia would be there.

"Is there another option?" she asked, half-joking.

The stylist smirked. "Not unless you want to wear a trash bag."

Jenny groaned. "Fine. But if I trip in these heels, I'm suing."

Just then, a slow clap echoed from the doorway.

She turned-and froze.

Leo leaned against the doorframe, wearing a black tux that fit him too damn well. His bowtie hung loose, his top buttons undone, giving him that infuriatingly careless look.

And his eyes?

They were roaming over her body, dark and unreadable.

Jenny's heart skipped a beat-then she immediately scowled.

"Enjoying the view?" she snapped.

Leo smirked. "For once, you don't look like a walking disaster."

She rolled her eyes. "And you still look like a privileged jerk."

He chuckled. "Charming." Then, he held out his arm. "Ready, sweetheart?"

She ignored his hand. "Let's just get this over with."

As she brushed past him, she heard him murmur, "This is going to be fun."

For who?

***

The gala was held at an opulent five-star hotel, the grand ballroom glittering with golden chandeliers and expensive champagne.

As soon as Jenny and Leo stepped inside, all eyes turned to them.

She felt the weight of a hundred stares, some curious, some judgmental.

Then came the whispers.

"That's her?"

"She's... unexpected."

"She won't last a month."

Jenny clenched her fists.

Leo, on the other hand, seemed completely unbothered, his grip on her waist possessive, commanding.

"You're making me nervous," she muttered.

He smirked. "Good."

Before she could kick his shin, a familiar voice cut through the noise.

"Wow, you actually showed up."

Jenny turned-and instantly wished she hadn't.

Julia.

Looking effortlessly elegant in a black gown, her red lips curved in a mocking smile.

Leo tensed slightly, but Jenny caught the hint of amusement in his eyes.

Julia's gaze flickered to Jenny's dress, then back up. "Nice try, sweetheart, but red doesn't make you look more important."

Jenny smiled sweetly. "Oh, I wasn't aiming for importance. Just making sure you knew I exist."

Julia's eyes darkened.

Leo chuckled. "Play nice, ladies."

Julia ignored him. "How long do you think this charade will last?" she asked Jenny, voice dripping with venom.

Jenny pulse quickened. She couldn't let Julia get to her.

So she stepped closer to Leo, placed a hand on his chest, and smiled.

"As long as it takes," she said smoothly.

Julia's jaw clenched.

Leo, to Jenny's annoyance, looked thoroughly entertained.

Before Julia could snap back, a new voice interrupted.

"Leo Smith. As arrogant as ever."

Jenny turned to see a tall, sharp-featured man approaching, his cold blue eyes locked onto Leo.

She didn't know who he was, but she could feel the tension crackling between them.

"Ethan Reynolds," Leo drawled. "Still bitter?"

Ethan smirked. "Just amused. I never thought I'd see the day you got engaged." His gaze flickered to Jenny. "And with... this?"

Jenny's nostrils flared. "Excuse me?"

Leo's expression hardened instantly.

Careful. Dangerous.

Ethan chuckled. "Relax. I was just wondering how much he paid you."

Jenny saw red.

Before she could rip Ethan apart, Leo voice came, cold and lethal.

"You talk too much, Reynolds."

The air turned ice-cold.

Ethan's smirk faltered, just for a second.

Then he shrugged. "We'll see how long you can keep this up."

And with that, he disappeared into the crowd.

Jenny's exhaled sharply. "What's his deal?"

Leo's jaw tightened. "Business rival. And a pain in my ass."

She frowned. "Why did he act like... I don't know, like you ruined his life?"

Leo's eyes darkened. "Because I did."

Jenny stared at him.

Before she could press further, he tugged her closer, his voice lowering.

"You did well," he murmured, brushing a strand of hair from her face.

She swallowed. "What?"

He smirked. "Keeping up. But next time, don't let them see when they get to you."

Her pulse spiked.

Was he... teaching her how to survive in his world?

Before she could respond, a waiter passed by with champagne.

Leo grabbed a glass.

Then, to her absolute horror, he raised it.

"To my future wife," he announced.

The entire ballroom turned toward them.

Jenny heart stopped.

Leo smirked at her, waiting.

He was doing it on purpose.

The crowd stared, waiting for her reaction.

If she messed up now, she'd look weak.

So, with every ounce of fake confidence, she lifted her own glass.

"To my perfect fiancé," she said smoothly.

Leos eyes gleamed.

The crowd applauded.

But Jenny knew-the real game had just begun.
