I stood on a hill overlooking the ocean.
Jarrod hadn't returned home, so I chose a burial plot for our baby by myself.
Before I was pregnant, I didn't particularly like the sea, but during my pregnancy, I found myself drawn to it. I supposed it was because the baby inside my belly loved the ocean.
So, I decided to lay him to rest in a place with a view of the sea.
"Here will do." I said, handing my bank card to the cemetery manager.
He took it with both hands and returned in less than two minutes, carefully saying, "I'm sorry, Mrs. Smith, there seems to be an issue with your card. Do you have another one?"
I frowned. "What's wrong with the card?"
He whispered, "It shows insufficient funds when I tried to process it."
"Impossible!" I exclaimed, eyes wide.
This card was specifically set up after I found out I was pregnant. And I had an agreement with Jarrod to deposit a fixed amount each month as an education fund for our child.
Including the money from my mother, there should be at least 240, 000 dollars. The burial plot cost only 200, 000, so how could it be insufficient?
I opened the banking app and discovered a large transaction three days ago-220, 000 to a real estate company.
The only people who could access this account were only Jarrod and me.
I called for the bank's customer service, and they informed me that the funds were deducted by a real estate developer. When I contacted the real estate company, they told me Jarrod had purchased a house, and this was the down payment.
"I'm Jarrod's spouse. I didn't sign anything. How could he buy a house?" I questioned them.
"Ma'am, the house wasn't purchased under Mr. Smith's name. It was bought for a woman named Sylvia Ford."
Jarrod had used the money saved for our baby to buy a house for Sylvia.
I was furious.
I called Jarrod.
When he didn't answer, I called his office.
Jarrod picked up.
"How dare you use the money from the card? That was saved for our baby." I angrily confronted Jarrod.
He paused for a moment. "I only borrowed it for a short while. I'll return it soon. Besides, the child is gone, so there's no need for that much money."
"What about the baby's burial plot? Doesn't that cost money?"
"Why buy a burial plot for a child who wasn't born? Isn't that just throwing money away? Besides, Sylvia got injured for saving you. Buying her a house is like atoning for your sins. What are you dissatisfied with?" Jarrod retorted angrily.
"She saved me? She didn't live there, so how did she just happen to run into me in a car accident?" I mocked.
"You're unbelievable."
"I don't care. The money in the card was saved by me, and my mother contributed too. If you use it to buy a house for another woman without my consent, I'll see you in court, and you won't get off easy."
"I didn't buy a house for Sylvia. I just lent her the money temporarily. Can you stop being such a nuisance? I have patients to attend to. Don't call unless it's urgent."
I stared at the phone after he hung up, my chest pounding with rage.
Jarrod, you've pushed me to this point.
