Chapter 4 Four

Athaliah stared at the door, it was closed but she could easily make out the shadow of Kate who was leaning against the door. The latter had been shocked to see at her door at about 7am with packed boxes. She knew what had happened with a glance.

She hadn't said a word except to help her into the house and help her pack her boxes into the house and Athaliah had walked into the guest room and laid in the bed trying to sleep and she had somehow fallen asleep.

She had woken up midday and discovered that Kate hadn't gone to work. She knew the latter was worried about her but Athaliah herself was yet to process everything that was happening.

"Stop leaning on the door, come in" she finally opened her mouth to speak and almost immediately the door knob turned and the door opening revealed Kate.

"You knew I was outside" Kate said softly and Athaliah shrugged her shoulders, "I could see your shadow" she replied trying to muster a smile as Kate crawled into bed with her.

Kate quickly adjusted herself on the bed and sat down beside her best friend, sticking herself close enough while allowing her back to lean against the bed board.

"Hey" Kate said softly while Athaliah turned her face to stare into space but the next moment, Kate's hand reached out and pressed her head to her shoulder.

"You can cry Atha" She muttered slowly and there was about two to six seconds of silence before Kate felt her shoulder start to vibrate slightly.

Athaliah couldn't have imagined that one statement from her best friend was enough to start the waterworks she had been so avoiding. She didn't even realize that she had started crying.

She was pained and hurt and tired. She didn't deserve the kind of treatment she got from Callum. She had done nothing but be a wife, she didn't even choose to be his wife.

Did he have to treat her like that? What did she ever do to him to get despised like that?

"You know that I tried to find out so many times if we've met before" Athaliah started in between sobs as she slowly raised her head to meet Kate's eyes. She proceeded to shake her head vigorously.

"Not even once had we met each other before we got married. So why did he hate me so much?" She asked and Kate grabbed her best friend's hands in between her own, rubbing them softly.

"Athaliah, can you not think about all these questions? You'll never get the answers to them. So why bother yourself so much about them?" She asked in reply.

"But don't I deserve to know why I got treated like that?" Athaliah asked, slowly leaning into Kate again.

"I wasn't expecting much from our marriage Kate, really I wasn't expecting much. We are two strangers from two different worlds, and somehow fate brought us together" she continued.

"I wasn't expecting much yet I expected a lot. I wanted to know if he would be like my father, if he would be as caring as him, as attentive as he is, maybe we would somehow cross over those huge boulders that stood between our worlds, I couldn't help but think about these things in my mind and expect them but what did i get?" She asked, laughing derisively at herself.

"Mind you Callum was more than caring, I mean as a husband he made sure I lacked nothing in the most formal way possible, gave me liberty to do what I wanted, I in passing told Silas I wanted to watch a movie at the cinema but it was too far away from home, two days later, we had a home in cinema, as big as the one in Kairos" Athaliah revealed while Kate stared at her in surprise.

"You never told me this" she commented and Athaliah chuckled, "You should have seen my face when Silas told me I could literally walk downstairs and watch any movie I wanted anytime I wanted" she replied and burst into laughter.

"He said he had mentioned it in passing to Callum and boom, he asked for a cinema in his own house and I had no idea when and how the cinema was built" she continued.

"Each time he went on trips, there was always a gift each time he came back, clothes, necklaces, rings, lots of jewelry. I thought he knew I liked them that's why he got them for me every time but he was just being a husband, getting things to his wife after a trip, to fulfill all righteousness. I was so sure that he was hiding something from me. Maybe deep down he liked me and couldn't say it but I know Callum Sinclair and I know that he despised every inch of me" Athaliah continued speaking while Kate merely continued rubbing the shoulders of her best friends listening quietly.

"We never ate together on the same table, was never in the house when I woke up, was never home yet when I went to sleep. He avoided me like a plague and he didn't try to hide that he was. One time I think he was home working and not even once did he step out of his room throughout the day. Isn't that funny? He didn't even want to be in the same space with me" she laughed again and Kate pursed her lips speechless.

"Did he hate our marriage so much? Or was it me he hated so much? I just wanted a hus......" Athaliah sobs prevented her from speaking and Kate quickly wrapped her hands around her best friends, rubbing her back softly.

"Nothing is your fault Athaliah, nothing at all. It's not your fault that your marriage didn't work. It's not your fault that your husband was a dickhead, it's not your fault that he was a jerk. Whatever reason he had for acting like a dickhead has nothing to do with you" Kate said comfortingly.

She was unmarried herself but she and Athaliah had talked for ages about how they hoped their marriages would turn out. They both wanted to marry people they loved and people who even loved them more but fate had other plans.

Getting married into the Sinclair family was pure luck, a kind of crazy luck that everyone in the world would pray for but it landed on Athaliah's laps.

More than anyone in the world, Kate shared Athaliah's worries. She has watched as every hope of Athaliah was dashed, thrown aside like it weighed nothing, like it didn't matter. And none of them could do anything about it.

One year into their marriage, Athaliah adapted to the situation quietly without complaints but Kate knew that there was still this tiny little hope in her that her marriage could turn around for the better. She had seen the heartache and pain in her eyes when Athaliah had told her Callum might divorce her when his grandfather died and she had been honest with her.

She couldn't bear or continue to see her best friend in pain and the best situation was to walk away from the marriage. It was the only solution even though they both hated it.

Callum's actions had always contracted with each other, one minute he was caring, the next he was alienated. He made them confused, no one could guess what he was thinking, why he did the things he did.

He was more than responsible as a husband, took care of Athaliah like he should but it was nothing more than that. They never shared the same table, not to talk of sharing a bed.

"I'm so sorry Athaliah, I'm sorry" She whispered, pulling her into the hug and hugging her tighter. This was the only comfort she could offer her.

Athaliah had no idea of how long she had cried but she had somehow slept off while crying and Kate had slowly laid her to bed. She immediately washed up and joined her best friend in the seating room.

"What are you going to do now?" She asked slowly and Athaliah smiled lightly, refusing to say anything.

EIGHT HOURS LATER.

"Have your parents called?" Kate asked with a resigned face and Athaliah nodded her head holding her boarding pass tightly, "They would visit me there"

"You are going to leave '' Kate started again and Athaliah nodded her head, "I have to leave" she replied and Kate closed her eyes.

She had been flabbergasted when Athaliah had said she was leaving. Nothing she said had been able to change her mind, she was hell bent on leaving and Kate could do nothing again rather than help her best friend.

"What will you do over there?" She asked slowly, opening her eyes and Athaliah smiled brightly.

"Should I remind you how much my alimony is? If I partied everyday for the next twenty years, I would have enough for my children" she replied and Kate laughed before nodding her head.

"Take care of yourself Atha" Kate said softly and Athaliah immediately closed the distance between her and her best friend wrapping her arms around her and blinking back her tears.

"I will. I promise"
