Chapter 5 sitting in the waiting room

better as I can. I snap out of my thoughts with my eyes wide open when I hear screams coming from David's room, I'm not going to get involved. Claire leaves the room in tears and even shouts "This won't stay like this" before she slams the door with all her strength and looks at me. "Did you lose something or are you just an idiot?" - I roll my eyes and take a deep breath so as not to respond to her in kind, after all she might be a bitch for attacking me for no reason but I'm not in the mood for that and I'm still at work, luckily she forgets and leaves huffing and puffing down the hallway.

I turn my attention back to work, keeping my cell phone close to me or in my pocket, the only way they can communicate with me about Sam is this way, so I have to be alert. - Hayley. - David calls me from his door. - Come on. He turns his back and enters his office making me repeat the same gesture already seeing him sitting in his black leather chair and pointing to another one for me. - We have to decide about the trip. - I sigh irritated. What does he think? That my son is baggage that I can leave at any time? - I already told you I can't David. - I exclaim. - Hayley, we're going on Friday morning and we'll be here Saturday night, leave Samuel with his father. - Damn, he's annoying me with this invasive conversation. - Samuel doesn't have a father David. - I say, letting my irritation show, but he keeps his gaze fixed on mine. I feel my cell phone vibrate in my pocket, I grab it quickly without worrying about the look I get from my dear boss and my heart skips a beat when I see Carol's name on the call. - Sorry, I know this will irritate you, but I need to answer. - And like I said, he seems even more irritated now, but I don't care and quickly answer the call, keeping his gaze. - Hi. - Hayley, Sam, he threw up and isn't doing well at all, I didn't know what to do. - My eyes fill with tears and I grip the arm of the chair. - Calm down. - I say with a choked voice and swallow the tears. - Where is he? - I brought him to the emergency room. They told me to bring him if anything happened, they're seeing him and doing tests. - I swallow the tears again and run my hand through my hair, my thoughts racing, but I still see David's questioning look. - I'll find a way and I'll find you... Carol. - I call, pretending to be calm. - Take care of him. - Okay. I hang up the call, disoriented, and lower my head, thinking about what to do. - What happened? - Samuel. - I whisper and quickly stand up. - David, you can send me away, but I need to find my son now. - I say firmly and he stands up too. - What happened? - He asks calmly and I start to pace back and forth, talking nonstop. - Yesterday I left early because he had a fever, the lady who takes care of him for me took him to the hospital, he got worse and now I need to go. Damn. - I exclaim irritated. - Even my car decided not to start today just to help. I feel hands on my shoulders stopping me and I look at his eyes that try to reassure me. - Calm down, I'll take you. - I nod and do everything automatically. I grab my bag, we get in the elevator and soon we're in his car. The only conversation we have during this time is when I told him where he should go. I don't know how he managed it, but in a few minutes we're in the parking lot. I run to the hospital entrance, stopping at the first reception to get some news. - Good afternoon. My son was brought here. - I say quickly and she sends me to the pediatrics floor. Only in the elevator do I realize that David hasn't left and continues to follow me in silence. I stop at the next reception and head to the room where they told me. I find Carol curled up in a chair, watching Sam sleeping in a bed. - Carol. - I call from her side, making her get up, dazed. - Hayley... I... I... he threw up, he had a fever, I didn't know what to do. - She runs over the words nervously and I put my arms around her body, calming her down, and I quickly distance myself. - It's okay, you did the best you could by bringing him. Did you tell Jacey? - She denies it. - Go home, rest and I'll call you with news. Tell Jacey for me, but I asked him to wait at home. She nods and leaves while I walk to the bed and kiss Sam, stroking his hair, watching him open his eyes. - Hi, love. - I whispered. - Mommy. Chapter 08 - Mommy. - My baby is complaining. - Everything's fine, little one. - I stroke his hair and sit down next to him. Sam runs his little hand over his arm where the IV is, making a face and then I move his hand away. - You can't move, Samuel. - Cover him with the sheet. - Rest. Still sleepy, he turns around, grabbing my hand on his body. I hear a clearing of his throat after a few minutes and turn to the side to find David still in the room. - Oh, I didn't see you were still here. Thanks for the ride. - You're welcome. - He says, looking at Sam in bed. - Yeah... I'll call the doctor for you. - Thanks. For the next few hours I watch the IV drip into my little one, the white walls and ceiling, and the soft breathing of my son who went back to sleep after having his blood test done and eating a light soup that was delivered to his room. The doctor said that all this sleepiness he's been feeling is due to the medication, but he assured me that he probably has a virus. I pick up my little one in my arms, already discharged and with the prescriptions for the medicines in my bag. I hate hospitals, just the smell makes me sick, but I stay strong for my little one. I go out to the reception and find David sitting in the waiting room. What is he still doing here? I walk towards him, noticing his fright, and as soon as he sees us he stands up. - What are you still doing here? - I ask quietly. - I thought you needed a ride home. - He shrugs and smiles. David lets me pass and I follow him in a different mood now. I carefully place Sam in the back seat and pass the seat belt, listening to his sleepy mumbles. We remain silent the whole way again. In front of the building where I live, I go down, grab my bag and open the back door. - Let me get it. - I look at him strangely and he explains himself. - You need your hands to get in. I don't answer and he takes it as an acceptance. I analyze him, taking Sam with all the care in the world, as if he were going to break at any moment, making me smile. We go up in silence and I am swallowed by Jacey's worried look and questioned as soon as I open the door with millions of questions. - Calm down, he's
