Chapter 8 [6]

Olive stomped her foot in frustration. She hit the innocent motorcycle's seat quite hard. If only she could scream in the parking lot to vent her anger, she would have done it. But Olive was using her wits to behave herself. She didn't want to unleash her desire to curse out her boss right now. And what if someone else heard her and made things even messier?

Being humiliated in front of Dela and Ayana was already bad enough.

She breathed heavily in frustration, scanning her surroundings. "Argh!" She couldn't take it anymore. "So annoying!!!" She wanted to say: "You damn boss, you're so annoying and jobless!" But she held back. "Oh Lord! Give me plenty of patience! Don't let me grow old in my mind because of this crazy boss!"

But Olive couldn't get rid of the image of her boss and his words, still echoing in her mind since earlier.

It all started during the busy hours when the queue was quite long, and one of the priority customers wanted to be served first. It was common knowledge that customers with special privileges would have one teller dedicated to serving them, mainly because their deposits usually exceeded five hundred million rupiahs.

To minimize disruptions, it was essential to focus on one teller for this.

Dela and Ayana quickly arranged for this to happen. Then Olive took over because Dela and Ayana also had other matters to attend to. She was used to handling priority customers. There were no issues initially. All the calculations matched, the deposit slips were in order, and the validation they did matched the amount of money.

The problem was...

Oh my, God! If only Olive hadn't held back from venting her frustration directly in front of Marta. Yes, in front of Marta, where Thomas was present.

There was a special procedure usually followed for deposits exceeding two hundred million. Besides validating it with the head teller, in this case, Ayana, it also needed to be acknowledged by the DBM or BM. What Olive did was in line with the procedure, but what made everything complicated was Thomas.

"Have you double-checked?" Thomas asked without looking at Olive. His eyes were fixed on the deposit slip in his hand. Marta was standing in front of him, accompanying Olive. She was actually quite surprised but due to direct orders, Marta hadn't dared to ask any questions yet.

"Yes, sir."

"Manually?"

"Along with the machine."

Thomas raised his gaze and stared directly into Olive's eyes, which showed no sign of hesitation. He nodded briefly and returned his attention to the deposit slip. "Do you know where the mistake is?"

Olive furrowed her brow. "Mistake?"

"Yes, a mistake." Thomas placed the deposit slip down. "I signed this because Mrs. Margareth was here. She's a potential customer. Don't disappoint her."

Olive remained silent, listening, but still didn't understand where she had gone wrong. As for the deposit slip still on Thomas's desk, she approached to retrieve it. "Where is the mistake, sir? I double-checked, and there's no error."

Thomas grinned. "Mrs. Marta, could you leave the room for a moment? Take the slip downstairs. Just hand it over to Ayana. I've made a copy to inform our potential head teller here, Mrs."

Olive couldn't accept the way Thomas said that. She remembered all the things she had done to check the deposit slip and the money. There was nothing wrong, so why was Thomas acting like this?

"Alright, sir." Actually, Marta herself was confused, but she couldn't argue with Thomas this time. Since the morning, for some reason, the boss's mood had been off. Even though, from what Marta knew about her job, there were no issues, and the central office had even sent appreciation for the exemplary staff last month. The evaluation for this month would only start on the fifteenth. So what was making Thomas act so strangely?

Shortly, the sound of the door closing indicated that Marta had left the room. Thomas still refused to lower his gaze from Olive. The girl didn't seem afraid at all. Instead, she appeared challenging and ready to argue right now.

"Take a good look at this copy of the slip," Thomas handed over the copy of the slip. "Examine where the mistake is."

Olive was reluctant but decided to do it anyway because she was also curious. She had checked it several times, and there was nothing wrong. So why was Thomas asking if there was a mistake? It was strange, wasn't it?

"There isn't any, sir," Olive replied while returning the slip. "I've looked multiple times."

"Sit down and take a closer look. It's not polite to speak to me while standing."

Olive stares. She can't just sit there without any reason, right? Why is she being blamed just for sitting? And being told she's impolite! Wow, Thomas is really being sensitive towards her! Olive pulls out a chair, feeling restrained so that her annoyance with Thomas doesn't show.

"Take a look again at where the mistake is," Thomas says, offering the copy of the slip again.

Maybe because she's already irritated, emotions have taken over, and she doesn't want to stay in Thomas's office any longer, even though it's comfortable, but not at all comforting for Olive. "There isn't any, sir. Sorry, maybe I'm just too dumb to figure out where the mistake is in a slip that, in my opinion, doesn't have any errors."

Thomas grins again. "I'm wondering why Mrs. Sonia recommended you as the head teller? Three months of probation here, and I have to evaluate? While you can't even identify a mistake in a slip like this."

Olive is astonished. Thomas talks non-stop, but what he's saying is quite belittling?

"Or maybe you should get your eyes checked, Liv? Maybe you need glasses?" Thomas asks sympathetically. "I'm not mocking you anymore, but if a slip like this can escape your attention, it might mean you're not concentrating or you really need glasses."

"No." Olive quickly interjects. "My eyes are fine, sir."

"Ah, so it's your concentration? Or... do you take Yohanes's advances seriously?"

Olive can't make sense of Thomas's recent statement. What does it have to do with Yohanes?

"If this slip is indeed problematic, why am I the only one you're interrogating? Miss Ayana should be questioned too." Olive is still not accepting being treated like this by Thomas.

"Oh?" Thomas chuckles upon hearing Olive's words. "Are you blaming Ayana? You are a candidate to replace Ayana here. How can you be blaming someone who shouldn't be responsible for you?"

"As long as I'm not officially the head teller, that means there's still a PIC in charge, right, sir?" Olive boldly asks. "You should also ask Miss Ayana." She won't just accept being blamed like this. After all, Olive has double-checked everything. So what else could be wrong?

Instead of being informed, it seems like they're having a showdown of knowledge? Not fair at all! Olive is still the underdog, right? While Thomas?

"Calling Ayana here would probably embarrass you more, Liv," Thomas straightens his back slightly. "As a head teller, regardless of any issues you may have, you must-"

"I don't have any issues, sir," Olive quickly interjects.

Thomas blinks slowly. "That's good to hear. No matter what issues you may have, when a customer approaches your desk, you must provide the best service. Concentrate and make an effort to listen to their feedback."

Olive knows that for sure.

"And don't let such a small issue slip by, Liv," Thomas points to the customer's missing signature, which indeed isn't there. "It's dangerous."

Olive blinks in surprise. She quickly grabs the photocopy of the slip and checks it repeatedly. She remembers there's a signature, even though it's small. "It's here, sir," Olive still doesn't accept it. "Look, sir. Even though it's a copy, I can still clearly see it."

"I know," Thomas clasps his hands together, resting his chin on the juncture of his hands. His eyes are still fixed on Olive, knowing that she's frustrated. He also has a lot of work to do. He feels like protesting to Sonia and the headquarters about Olive's name being suggested here.

How can she be considered competent if she can't correct such a small mistake, and she seems unwilling to listen to advice and instructions? What do you call that if not defiance?

"If such a small and subtle signature can trigger other mistakes, Liv," Thomas sighs softly. "Can you ask for the signature again? There's 26,555,55 dollars in this deposit slip. The amount is substantial."

Olive grits her teeth. She can't believe Thomas is treating her like this.

"Are you going to take responsibility? Just because Mrs. Margareth visits frequently doesn't mean we can let her make mistakes, right? We should have anticipated this earlier. We don't know when a friend can turn into an enemy, when a colleague can become a foe, or when bad luck will strike you."

Seeing her new subordinate fall silent, though her eyes show disagreement, Thomas doesn't say anything else.

"Don't repeat it. Ask for a clear customer signature. That's the primary validation, right?"

"Yes, sir."

"All right. That's all I wanted to discuss."

"Forgive me, sir."

Thomas goes back to her report.

Olive gets ready to leave Thomas's office. "I apologize." But before she can take another step out of the room, she's stopped by Thomas's somewhat audacious statement.

"I'll give you another chance. If there's another mistake, even though you're a senior, I can still call you out on it. Seniors shouldn't neglect the basics of checking just because they're seniors, right? Don't you dare underestimate it just because you're a senior."

"No, sir," Olive immediately turns back.

"Good, then. I'll consider today an issue of concentration. Your reputation outside is good, and you're considered a model employee, right? They say you're meticulous and hardworking. But if you can overlook such a small mistake, how should I assess you?"

Olive clenches her fists tightly. Thomas's words that have been bothering her all day are incredibly irritating! If she made a mistake, she already apologized, right? Does it really require apologies that make her angry?

"Argh!!!"

"Liv, what's wrong?" Yohanes, who had been observing Olive all this time, approaches her.

"Oh, you're here? What are you doing?" Olive asks.

Yohanes points to his motorcycle, parked not far from where Olive is standing. "Ah, right," Olive grimaces. She forgot that Yohanes had arrived with her in the morning. "I'll head off first."

"Why were you shouting?" Yohanes doesn't want to let Olive go so easily because she's been acting strangely all day. It's not like she's possessed or anything, right?

"It's nothing, Yohanes." Olive quickly puts on her helmet, starts her motorcycle, and leaves without giving Yohanes a chance to continue questioning her. Unfortunately, in her rush to exit the parking area, she loses her balance and slips just as she approaches the exit.

"Argh! Dammit!!!" Olive curses in frustration.
