Chapter 4 The Internship

Camila kept her head down as she hurriedly fetched her medical kit. She cleared her throat and gave him some pointers. She was still a doctor, after all. "You must not get your wounds wet for the time being. Disinfect them once a day, and wear loose shirts so as not to aggravate your wounds."

She took out a bottle of pills and a tube of ointment, setting them down on the nightstand. "I'm leaving you these medicines."

Isaac hummed in acknowledgment, but still didn't turn around.

Camila said nothing more, either, and immediately exited the villa.

By the time she arrived back at the hospital, it was almost eleven in the morning. She headed to the canteen to grab a bite to eat. Camila had barely settled on her desk when she was called to the hospital director's office.

"I'm sending Debora to the Military Central Hospital for the internship," the director said in a tone that brooked no argument.

Camila was dumbfounded. "But I thought you already made up your mind to send me?"

"Camila, I'm sure you know that all the high-tech equipment in our hospital was sponsored by the Paramount Corporation. President Johnston has personally asked me to take care of Debora. I can't afford to go against his instructions."

Camila couldn't help but bristle at the mention of Isaac's name. They might be legally married, but they had never really officially met.

She only saw him on magazines and the occasional TV news.

So, he and Debora?

Camila's heart skipped a beat, but she remained composed. "Is that so?"

"Yes, I'm afraid I have very little choice in the matter. Listen, Camila, we both know the extent of your skills, but..." The director wanted to comfort her, but wasn't sure how. Camila stood out from her peers, thanks to her incredible talent and professional ethics. He appreciated her the most.

"I understand," Camila muttered under her breath.

She told herself she wasn't in any position to feel disappointed about Isaac's involvement in this. He had been forced to marry her. Surely, she couldn't expect him to care about her at all.

"I still have a surgery to prepare for, so I'll be taking my leave," she said in a resigned tone.

Camila knew there was nothing she could do to reverse the situation.

The director could only sigh and watch her go.

Camila dove back into work with vigor in an attempt to get her mind off the internship. She finished her second surgery without a hitch, then discarded her surgical uniform and watched up before plopping wearily on a chair.

It was then that Debora came into the lounge.

"Hello, Camila," she greeted with a bright smile. "Are you free tonight? Let me treat you to dinner."

"I'm sorry, but I have stuff to sort out later," Camila politely declined. She wasn't particularly on good terms with Debora. They were simply colleagues, not friends.

The two had graduated at the same time, from the same university.

Even back then, Debora had already been quite the character. She was very competitive, and always wanted to show off and get everyone's attention.

Camila, on the other hand, preferred to blend into the background and lose herself in her books. One could say that the women were exact opposites.

Naturally, they didn't get along very well.

"Oh, that's too bad," Debora said, looking embarrassed for some reason. "There's actually something I wanted to talk to you about."

Camila stood and went over to her locker to hang her lab gown. "Go ahead," she said without looking at Debora.

The fact that her colleague had entangled herself with Isaac in one way or another only made Camila want to distance herself from Debora even more.

"You must have heard, right? I'm really sorry. I had no idea that the director would—"

"It's okay," Camila interrupted.

But Debora wasn't done yet. "And also, can you keep it a secret that you took over my shift last night? You know, since I'm going to attend the Military Central Hospital, I don't want it to cause any problems."

Though this wasn't a very unusual request coming from Debora, Camila didn't dwell on it.

"I won't tell anyone."

It wasn't all that strange to take over a colleague's shift, anyway.

They were bound to encounter personal emergencies every once in a while.

Out on the hospital grounds.

It was getting dark, and the streetlights were flickering to life one by one.

Forrest was sitting in the back seat of a black expensive car that was parked by the gates. "Well," he said, his voice filled with pride, "what did you think of my junior? She has excellent skills, doesn't she?"

Beside him, Isaac leaned back in his seat. He thought back to the doctor who had treated him earlier and remembered how calm and precise her actions had been. He was, in fact, amazed by her skills.

"It's Miss Griffith." Willie suddenly spoke up.

Isaac lowered his window just as Debora went up to the car.

Forrest's eyebrows went up to his forehead. "Debora?"

Willie whirled around from the driver's seat. "You know her?"

Forrest nodded with a curious glint in his eyes. "She was my junior in university."

Isaac got curious when he heard this.

So, apart from saving him last night, this woman had tended to his wounds as well?

"Is this fate?" Willie exclaimed.

Did the universe finally decide to give his boss a shot at love?

"What the hell are you talking about?" Forrest asked, frowning as he looked back and forth between the two other men.

But he would not get his answer, as Debora was just outside the car and promptly interrupted their conversation.

"Mr. Johnston."
