Chapter 4 HER ANGER

Scarlet checked the time on her wristwatch for the umpteenth time in five minutes. She adjusted herself on her seat and looked around. It felt like everyone in the coffee shop was staring at her because she was alone, whereas they were also going about their affairs. She rubbed her hands together as she looked outside the window which was directly next to her seat.

"What would you like to order?" A female waiter dressed in a short gown that was covered by her blue apron said to her with a smile on her face.

"Uhm, me?" Scarlet asked, even though she knew it was her the waiter was referring to. She felt a bit uncomfortable. She wanted a coffee, alright, but she could not waste her money on unnecessary stuff, not when she just got fired from the only job she depended on. So, she decided to cover up with an excuse.

"I'm okay. If I want to order anything, I'll let you—"

"Two chilled coffee please," a coarse voice cut in and both heads of the ladies turned to the direction it came from.

"Add two cubes of sugar each. Thank you, ma'am." He then pulled out the chair opposite Scarlet and sat on it.

"Right away, sir." The waiter said and left them.

"Mr Ryan." As a form of greeting, Scarlet called the name of the man seated in front of her.

With a broad smile on his face, he replied. "It's Alexander. And I'm sorry for keeping you waiting."

"Yeah, no problem at all." She replied. Silence ensued after while they awaited their drinks. Not sure of what to say, she decided to ask him how he got her number.

"Uhm, how… were you able to you know… reach me?"

"Oh, that," Alex said and chuckled.

"Got your phone number from one of your colleagues at the bar section." Scarlet simply nodded.

"Here are your orders." The waiter from before arrived and dropped two cups of coffee in front of both of them. She then carried her empty tray from the table and added, "enjoy your drinks." With a smile on her face, she walked away to another table, leaving them in silence.

"So, how have you been doing for the last two days?" Trying to start another conversation between them, he asked.

"Oh, it's been good. Fine." She replied, but even a blind person would notice how uncomfortable she was when she replied. She shifted on her seat and cleared her throat, but no words came after. She lied. She had not been fine. It's been two days and she still had not been able to wrap her head around the things that happened. Since she got fired, she had stayed at home. She was bothered about her job and how she'd get a new one, but all she could think about during the last two days was Chris. The shock, she hadn't gotten over it yet.

"Are you okay?" Alexander suddenly asked as she took in the worried expression on his face. Alexander was different from all the rich men she had encountered her whole life. Ever since she knew him in the hotel, he had never for once shouted at a worker or talked harshly to them. Even if they made mistakes, he would rather scold them calmly than make a fuss out of it. Scarlet respected him so much for this because he did not let his wealth blind his eyes from being a good person. He was a nice man, not only to her but to everyone else.

Many times she wondered what he had seen in her that made him speak to her in the most friendly way possible. One thing she knew though, was that he likes her, but she was not ready to accept that fact, and thankfully, he has never voiced it out. And hopefully, he doesn't.

"Scarlet?" He called as he slightly tapped her hand which was on the table. Scarlet jerked out of her thoughts and back to reality.

"Yes? Yes, I'm fine. Just… reflecting on some stuff."

"Stuff?" Alexander asked with raised eyebrows. "Is this about your job and you getting fired?" She nodded slowly and muttered a yes. It was more than that, but she could not voice that out. She could not possibly tell him that their boss was her childhood friend who suddenly didn't recognize her. Her mind flashed back to the event at Chris' office two days before, and a heavy look of confusion was seen on her face.

She placed her hand on her chin, her eyebrows scrunched up and stared at nothing in particular. How in the world did he not remember me? Not even at all? Could he be faking it? She thought. As much as she wanted to make herself believe that he was faking it and he could recognize her clearly, her subconscious mind also told her that it looked more like he didn't know her. It was like they had never met in their entire life. He can't be pretending to not know me, can he? She thought as she curled her fingers unknowingly to ease the hurt she was feeling.

Her whole body went numb at that very moment, and it felt like everything else shut down. Her brain could not think of anything else but him. Alex noticed her uneasiness as he sipped a little bit of his coffee, but he decided not to stress it.

"About that, you have nothing to worry about. That's why I'm here in the first place." Scarlet's mind came back to reality when Alex spoke. She immediately sat up on her chair and the uninterested spirit in her vanished, she wanted to hear more. She wanted to know what he meant when he told her not to worry about her getting fired.

"Uhm, what… what do you mean? Did something new happen?"

"Well, you've been re-employed," Alexander said to her with a broad smile on his face, which showed almost all his teeth. His bushy eyebrows scrunched up on the process also. He knew how much hearing that would mean to her, and he stared at her to see what her expression would be.

"Oh my God," Scarlet said and held her head, bowing it a bit. Then, she raised her head to look at him.

"Thank you so much. You don't know how much this means to me at this period. Thank you." Alexander smiled in satisfaction. Whenever he saw her happy, he was always happy too. Seeing her happy once again made him feel fulfilled.

"It's not a big deal. Just have your coffee and calm your mind." Scarlet smiled back at him as she carried her cup of coffee with joy and drank it. _____ Scarlet dusted the wine rack with the rag in her hand, then she replaced the ones that had just been sold with new ones. She was doing this when someone came to order.

"Excuse me." "Yes? What would you like to ord…" She turned and paused her sentence as she saw that it was Alexander. She had wanted to appreciate him again when she resumed back to work the day before, but she had not seen him since the coffee date.

"Mr Ryan," she called with a small smile on her face.

"It's Alexander, Scarlet." He corrected her again like he always does. Avoiding what he had just said, she changed the subject of discussion.

"Thank you so much for getting my job back for me," she said and bowed her head a bit. "Anytime, Scarlet. Uhm, would you like to join me in the cafeteria?"

He asked politely. She was about to reply when he added, "and I don't take no for an answer. It's either yes or yes." He said and raised an eyebrow at her, trying to persuade her to go with him.

"Uhm, I don't know about that…" Her voice trailed off as she moved her long hair to one side and itched the back of her neck nervously.

"The thing is that I don't want to leave my work here at the counter. I don't want any more troubles again." Truly, she did not want to leave her work at the counter, but that was not her main reason. The hotel was crowded today, as a lot of customers walked in and out of it. Most of those that come to the hotel are wealthy people, and they were also the ones that make use of the cafeteria the most. She knew if she was to go there and have a seat with Alexander, gossip would fly around. And for the second time, she didn't want anything that would make her go back to face the director. To face the one person she waited for, but he ended up not recognizing her. Alexander chuckled as he rested his ankle on the counter.

"You don't always have to fill up your day with work. Do you want to overwork yourself? Get some rest in between these jobs. Live a little, Scarlet." She sighed and replied, "sure. Lead the way, please. I'll be right behind you."

He sure had his way with words when it came to her and even though she was not fully convinced to go eat at the cafeteria, she just had to obey her conscience by going with him. For someone who had been nice to her ever since she got to the hotel, and being the one who helped her get her job back, this was something little, but she had to do it to show her gratefulness. Alexander smiled at her and walked forward to the cafeteria with Scarlet following closely behind. Her heart had begun to beat loudly by now, but she formed her hand into a fist and gently hit her chest with it. Everything is going to be alright, Scarlet, she thought to herself. They got there, ordered food and went ahead to sit. As soon as their meals arrived, they began to eat. While they did, they spoke and laughed with each other. By now, her worries and fear of coming to the café from before had begun to fade.

"And that was how she left in anger," Alexander added and they both burst into laughter again.

"She must have a short temper," Scarlet replied, her eyes teary from the laughs she had been having since she got to the café. She was having a good time till she choked on her meal and Alexander helped her with some water.

"Sorry, dear. Have some water," he said as he poured some water into a cup from the jug on their table.

"Here," he gave it to her. "Thank you," she collected the cup of water as she coughed. She almost coughed the food out as she beat her chest gently. She immediately took in the water, rushing it a bit.

"Carefully, Scarlet," Alexander said, seeing how she rushed to drink the water. She simply nodded as she kept on drinking the water, now more gently than before. Almost immediately, Alexander's phone rang. He checked the caller and picked up the phone. "I'll be right back," he said to Scarlet, who simply nodded in response to him. He then picked up the call as he stood up to walk away from the table.

Scarlet was about to drop the cup on the table when someone pushed the table and the stuff on it fell to the ground. She assumed it was a mistake, but seeing how the rest of her meal and Alexander's poured to the floor annoyed her. She was there when Alexander paid for it, and it was very expensive that she could not bear to waste such luxury. Now, this? She could not let it slide.

"Why the fuck don't you watch where you're g…" She exclaimed, but her voice trailed off as she raised her head to look at whoever had done that. Seeing who it was, she immediately stood up and bowed her head before speaking. "I… eh… I meant—" "What the hell are you still doing here? No, tell me, what are you doing here?" Christopher asked as he poked Scarlet's head in annoyance. He hated being disobeyed and seeing Scarlet in his hotel after he had fired her fueled the anger in him. "Can't you speak?!" He shouted, drawing the attention of almost everyone in the café to them.

"Did you not read the letter I gave to you?" Scarlet felt humiliated. Her chest tightened as her head got hot. Anger fueled inside her as Chris kept on talking, not minding how harsh and hurtful his words sounded. What made it worse was that it was not in his office this time, it was right in front of everyone.

"I hate people like this!" He exclaimed and followed it by doing the unexpected. He spat on her, which made many people howl. That was one of his bad habits, he spat on people whenever they disobey him. This only aggravated her anger. She could not bear the embarrassment anymore.

She tried to hold herself from doing anything she'd regret, but her hand had other plans. What happened next was more of a reflex action, because it was only after it happened that she realized what she had just done. Pa! That was the sound of the slap she gave Christopher Kent on the cheek, not minding the fact that he was her boss.

He was taken aback, as he held his cheek in shock, and everyone in the café also gasped. Not waiting for his reply or anything else, she picked up her phone on the table and stormed out of the café, leaving Chris who was still surprised and shocked on the spot.
