Nicola learned along the way that Cassie and Lachlan were cornered by reporters at the hotel.
Lachlan had always pretended to be a devoted husband.
One of the subsidiary companies was offering its stock to the public soon. If any scandal were exploited by his competitors, he would suffer significant losses.
Nicola put on a hat and a mask to avoid recognition. Then she borrowed a uniform from a waitress at the hotel before she managed to slip unnoticed into the presidential suite.
Inside the room, Lachlan was wrapped in nothing but a towel. There were fresh scratch marks on his shoulders and back.
Cassie wore seductive clothing and had some marks of intimacy on her, which silently indicated what they had done before.
Lachlan's lie that he had stayed at the company for the whole night was naturally unraveled.
Seeing Nicola enter, Lachlan was visibly relieved. He instinctively pushed Cassie away a bit. "Nicola, the reporters didn't get any front shots of Cassie. Later, you and Cassie switch outfits and leave with me. We will tell others that we came here for a romantic game."
Cassie picked up a red dress from the floor and tossed it at Nicola's face. "Here, take this. Lachlan just bought it for me, and I've only worn it once."
The dress fell to the floor. It was stained with some unknown filth.
The cold zipper hit Nicola's face, and she seemed to be physically slapped.
Lachlan hadn't expected Cassie's sudden action, and his expression changed slightly. "Nicola, Cassie didn't mean it..."
He wanted to explain when Nicola abruptly slapped Cassie hard across the face. Smack!
"Ah!" Cassie clutched her cheek and looked at Nicola in disbelief. "You dare slap me?"
Nicola ignored Cassie and turned to Lachlan. "Can I?"
Cassie's eyes turned red. She looked at Lachlan with a face full of grievance.
Lachlan rose and pulled Cassie behind him. He said coldly, "Nicola, Cassie didn't mean it. Why do you have to be so aggressive?"
His words of defense for Cassie felt like a sharp stab to Nicola's heart.
Nocila's face turned pale. She took out the divorce agreement from her purse and handed it to Lachlan. "I can help you deal with this, as long as you sign it."
Lachlan didn't take the document. He frowned and said impatiently, "You have some shares of the company, too. You are not helping me."
Nicola remained silent, and she looked stubborn.
Only then did Lachlan take the document. "What contract is it? Why do I have to sign it now?"
He was about to read it when Cassie rushed into the next room and cried.
Lachlan lost patience and flipped to the signature page. He swiftly signed his name and tossed the document back to Nicola. He said impatiently, "Is that okay?"
Then he hurried into the next room to console Cassie.
Then Nicola heard Lachlan's gentle and patient voice from the next room and the soft sounds of kissing.
Nicola looked through the document in her hand. The divorce agreement included a waiver of custody rights, and Lachlan's name was already signed there.
Her hands trembled as she put the document away. She bit her lip, but she couldn't hold back the tears welling in her eyes.
She didn't wear the red dress on the floor. Instead, he put on the outfit she had worn when she arrived and then left the hotel with Lachlan.
She didn't have to dirty herself. Her face alone could explain everything.
The reporters had waited for a long time and hoped for a big scoop. They were very disappointed when they saw Nicola.
One of them couldn't contain his anger and shouted from a distance at Nicola, "Miss Hayes, it's the first time I've seen a wife help the mistress. It's impressive."
He made a thumbs-up gesture and then slowly turned it down. He sneered as he walked away.
Nicola's face turned pale as Lachlan put his arm around her and guided her into the car.
The vehicle drove a kilometer and successfully left the reporters behind.
Nicola's hand rested on her abdomen. She was hesitating about whether to tell him about her pregnancy. She hoped to give him one last chance.
Lachlan suddenly parked the car. "Cassie's face is swollen from your slap. I need to take her to the hospital. You'll have to catch a cab home."
Nicola clutched her purse on her lap tightly. "Lachlan, do you remember who your wife is? You once said you only loved me, that she was just a plaything. You..."
Before she could finish, Lachlan glanced at her, and his eyes were filled with extreme impatience and coldness.
Nicola's lips trembled, and she couldn't utter another word.
Lachlan had held her and repeatedly whispered promises that he loved her forever. But he showed no warmth when she mentioned the past.
Lachlan tapped the car door and said coldly, "Get out."
Nicola's limbs felt stiff as she stepped out of the car. Then he drove it away immediately.
The breeze stirred Nicola's skirt as she put a hand on her abdomen. Her gaze became icy.
Lachlan didn't deserve to know about the baby. Nor did he deserve its father.
