Chapter 6

Everyone in the company knew that my 1, 314th wedding with Kody was cancelled again.

As soon as I stepped into the office, everyone seemed busy, but in reality, their keyboards were clattering away as they fervently joked about my misfortune in the group chat.

I silently gathered my things, feeling extremely uncomfortable.

Kody personally announced to everyone, "For the time being, Tonya will take over Clara's current job. Any job requiring my approval should first be handled by Tonya."

I paused, sensing his gaze on me.

His tone was uncharacteristically gentle.

"As you all know, Clara and I have been busy preparing for our wedding, so try not to disturb her unless it's necessary." Noticing I kept my head down, he hesitated and then suddenly added, "Clara, you have been with me for years and know the company well, so you should teach Tonya these next few days."

Tonya let out a laugh, extending her hand toward me.

"Clara, if you need any help with the wedding, just let me know," she whispered in my ear, lowering her voice. "If I were you, I'd be too embarrassed to even show up at the company."

I bit my lower lip unconsciously, as she briefly grasped my hand before dismissively letting go.

Kody, busy replying to messages, didn't notice Tonya's quick change of demeanor.

He leaned in closer, a smile playing on his lips. "Come to my office."

Tonya's eyes flashed with a hint of jealousy as she noticed our proximity.

I remained still, prompting Kody to frown slightly and clear his throat. "Clara, come with me."

Colleagues discreetly observed my expression, practically broadcasting their curiosity.

Reluctantly, I followed him.

As soon as we entered his office, Kody's arm wrapped around me, pinning me against the door.

His warm breath brushed past my ear, carrying a familiar scent.

However, his faint aroma was identical to the one Tonya wore.

I frowned, trying to sidestep him.

Kody raised an eyebrow, resting his other arm above my head, leaning down to look into my eyes.

"Still refusing to talk to me, Clara? You weren't like this before." He always brought up the past.

Thinking of the thousands of times he broke his promise, our past had become something I didn't want to remember at all.

I pushed against him with all my strength, but failed.

Kody's expression shifted, perhaps unaccustomed to my resistance.

His tone grew firmer. "How long are you going to keep this up? You're even ignoring my calls now."

He leaned in to kiss me, murmuring, "It's only because it's you. If someone else does this, I will dump her."

I held my breath, pressing my hands firmly against his chest. "Let me go."

Suddenly, the door swung open, and the smile froze on Tonya's face.

Kody immediately released me, awkwardly stepping back.

Tonya regained her composure, letting out a chuckle. "Did I come at a bad time?"

Kody cleared his throat, returning to his desk.

He handed me two bags that were sitting there. "Clara..."

He glanced at me quickly, a hint of guilt in his eyes.

Tonya, on the other hand, casually perched on his desk, smilingly interjected. "Clara, I adore that platinum bag, so I decided to keep it for myself."

She gestured to the bags in my hand. "I have another style that I'll give you as compensation, okay? You don't mind, do you?"

I watched them coldly, their harmony was unnerving, showing no sign of discomfort at the situation.

I casually placed the bags back on the sofa.

Kody was taken aback, his expression darkening. "Clara, how can you not accept a gift from Tonya?"

"It's her gift. Do I have to like it?" In the past ten years, I had never spoken to him like this.

My family always treated him with deference, and I had to constantly yield to him, too.

His eyes widened slightly, as if in disbelief.

I looked him straight in the eye. "I don't need the concert tickets either. I'm not interested anymore. I've waited too long. I don't want to watch it anymore."
