The silence on the other end of the line lasted for three seconds, followed by a soft chuckle. "Of course I am!"
Terrance asked Lynda with keen interest what was going on, but once Lynda recounted the situation, he fell silent.
Lynda assumed he no longer wished to take her case and was about to hang up the phone in despair.
Unexpectedly, Terrance suddenly said, "You've been wronged."
Those words were all it took for Lynda to break down in tears, unable to hold back any longer.
She had loved Charles for eight long years, and she truly felt deeply aggrieved.
After she had cried her heart out, Terrance cleared his throat and spoke, "Ms. Bennett, I'll take this case. I'll return to the country in a month to help you appeal. Please provide me with the evidence as soon as possible."
She immediately contacted the police to request the surveillance video, just then, a sharp voice rang out behind her. "What evidence?"
Charles suddenly appeared behind her, his gaze icy and penetrating. Panic-stricken, Lynda quickly hung up the phone.
Just as she was about to make up an excuse to brush things off, Charles spoke first, his voice filled with boundless anger. "Eleanor is young and accidentally hit your mother after drinking a little. I've already compensated you generously. Typically, compensation for an accident is usually much less. Lynda, you should be content. You're still coming out ahead."
She was still coming out ahead?
Lynda looked at the cold-faced Charles in disbelief, her heart felt like it was being ripped apart.
In Charles' mind, it seemed that everyone except Eleanor was just like a business transaction, including his wife and mother-in-law.
With tear-filled eyes, Lynda stubbornly looked at him and trembled as she questioned, "Was Eleanor's act truly accidental? She knew she hit someone but still forcibly dragged and crushed until my mom completely died. Isn't that murder? Shouldn't Eleanor be held accountable for her mistakes?"
She couldn't understand how Charles could so brazenly distort the truth to protect Eleanor.
Was it all because of love?
Charles' brows furrowed deeply, his long and narrow eyes exuding a chill. He seemed to have run out of patience.
Lynda laughed bitterly. After eight long years in love, Charles was always impatient with her. Often, by the time she got to the third sentence, he turned away and left.
Just when Lynda thought Charles was about to leave, he suddenly stepped forward, expressionless, and said, "Lynda, I'll give you one more chance."
With that, he beckoned, and a bodyguard respectfully handed over a phone.
In the video, Lynda's father, Geffrey Bennett, who had long been in a vegetative state, was in a hospital room that was now filled with a group of bodyguards dressed in black.
The lead bodyguard held a revolver, its dark muzzle aimed at Geffrey's head.
Charles' voice was chilling, as if it came from hell, "Your father or the lawsuit withdrawal, choose one."
A wave of dread enveloped her, and Lynda felt cold all over, her blood instantly freezing. She screamed, "Charles, are you even human?! My father saved your life!!!"
Lynda would never forget the day Geffrey saved Charles.
Seven years ago, after Charles agreed to be her boyfriend, he casually funded the Bennett family, but the Bennett family was already beyond saving.
To thank Charles, Geffrey humbled himself to become Charles' driver.
When Charles was kidnapped, Geffrey risked his life and was severely injured saving him, taking fifty-five stab wounds from the kidnappers.
Seeing Geffrey covered in blood, Lynda nearly cried her heart out. Yet, Geffrey used his last strength to place her hand in Charles', then used his final breath to say, "Lynda, I saved Mr. Watson for you... I know... if something happened to him, you'd be heartbroken..."
That day, Lynda cried her heart out, and for the first time, Charles didn't let go of her hand, out of respect for Geffrey.
Afterward, Charles covered all of Geffrey's medical expenses and promised Lynda that even if he didn't love her later, he would take care of Geffrey for life.
But he went back on his word. He forgot what he had once said.
For Eleanor, he was willing to kill Geffrey, his lifesaver.
Lynda trembled with anger, her teeth chattering as she spoke, "Charles, have you forgotten my father became a vegetable saving you?"
Even with the facts right in front of her, she couldn't believe Charles would go to such ruthless lengths for Eleanor.
Charles didn't answer her but instead brought the settlement agreement to her face and coldly uttered, "Sign it."
In the video, the bodyguard had already pulled the trigger.
Lynda sensed that if she didn't sign today, Charles would truly kill Geffrey.
She suddenly laughed, but her eyes were full of despair, "Fine, I'll sign."
With Terrance involved, even after settling, she could appeal again.
After Charles got what he wanted, he prepared to leave with the settlement agreement, but Lynda called after him, "Charles..."
Unexpectedly, she was abruptly interrupted by him, "I have urgent matters, don't cling to me, I don't have time to accompany you."
Lynda's heart choked. How could he think she still loved him at this point?
Moreover, his so-called urgent matters were nothing more than responding to an emoji Eleanor had just sent him.
Lynda forced herself to suppress the bitterness in her heart and flipped to the last page of the divorce agreement, speaking softly, "Ten billion isn't enough. I want more. Sign this document."
Charles glanced at his watch and signed with a flourish.
Lynda asked quietly, "Aren't you going to check what it is?"
"No need." His voice was as cold as ever.
Lynda smiled bitterly. Indeed-when it came to her, he never bothered.
She watched silently as him left, but she didn't expect Charles to suddenly turn back at the door, "I heard you went to the law firm today, don't waste your effort, no one will take your case."
Charles didn't know that she went to the law firm to print the divorce agreement, the very document he had just signed.
Lynda didn't care about his warning, but when she contacted the police, she understood Charles' words.
He had used his influence to delete all the evidence.
To protect Eleanor, he left no stone unturned.
Lynda suddenly lost all strength, she sank to the floor in despair, yet the baby in her belly kept tormenting her, making her nauseous.
Determination flashed in her eyes as she made an appointment for an abortion.
The next moment, the doctor called, "I'm sorry, Ms. Bennett, your body isn't suitable for an abortion. If you insist, the side effects are severe, and you might never be able to conceive again."
After hanging up, Lynda gently caressed her belly.
She decided not to have an abortion; she couldn't let Charles affect her future life.
She could raise the child alone.
After the divorce, the child would be hers alone, and had nothing to do with Charles!
Just then, Terrance called, "Ms. Bennett, if you can obtain a recording of the crime, I'll spare no effort in pursuing the case."
