Chapter 12 The Conspiracy Unfolds

/ 1

Kate's POV
Warm sunlight fell on my skin as it passed through the curtains. Bright and cheery when my life was anything but, it felt like a cruel joke.
I briefly contemplated remaining in bed and moping over my suffering. Simon's icy words, "This isn't working," then replayed in my head.
I shook my head and stated out loud, "No." "I refuse to allow him to destroy me."
After dragging myself out of bed, I went to the mirror. With its big eyes, pale complexion, and tangled hair from all the tossing and turning over the night, my reflection appeared to be a ghost.
I whispered to myself, "Kate, you're stronger than this." "Now is the time to go on."
I took a brief shower and then reached for my sketchbook. My desire had always been to work in fashion, but I had put it on hold because of Simon. Nothing was stopping me now.
I paused before taking up my phone when it buzzed. Anna, an old acquaintance who ran a little downtown fashion house, sent the email.
I've heard that you're trying to find a job, Kate. You are the kind of designer we need. Shall we have a conversation?"
A flicker of hope ignited within my chest. This was my opportunity. I promptly responded, arranging an afternoon appointment.
I told myself in a whisper while I was getting dressed, "Kate, this is your new beginning. Don't mess it up.
The charity gala's high-profile guests' talk filled the space. Anna had asked me to assist with setup at the last minute. I wanted the publicity even if it wasn't my scene anymore.
I saw him at that point. Simon.
He was conversing with an older man in a suit while he stood by the bar. Although he had a serious expression on his face, his eyes looked to be searching the room for something or someone.
My heart racing in my chest as I froze. My initial reaction was to hide, but then I recalled my self-promise. I had stopped running.
I looked away and concentrated on setting up the exhibit of Anna's creations. However, I could feel Simon's eyes pierce my back.
"Why are you in this place? As she passed me with her arms stuffed with cloth, Anna muttered.
I whispered, "Just trying not to fall apart."
Simon's mind was racing across the room. He saw Kate's head held high as she moved through the crowd with grace. She was stronger, different.
Vanessa's voice purred next to him, "She's doing fine without you."
Simon tensed. Vanessa, what are you doing here?"
As she sipped her champagne, she remarked, "Helping you stay focused." "You don't require her diversions."
Simon scowled at her. "What I need is not up to you to decide."
Vanessa made a low, dismissive laugh. "Come on, Simon. You made a decision. Don't begin to regret it right away.
As Kate talked to another man, a tall, dark-haired stranger who appeared overly interested in her, Simon ignored her and fixed his gaze on her.
Though tiny, the exhibit was teeming with activity. Models with designs that showed enthusiasm and inventiveness strolled down the makeshift runway. I was standing close to the back, nervously gripping my portfolio.
I take it you're Kate Dawson. Behind me, a deep voice spoke.
When I turned around, I saw a man in his late forties wearing a well-tailored suit. There was something impenetrable in his eyes, but his smile was pleasant.
"Yes," I responded warily, "that's me."
He held out his hand and introduced himself as Lucas Hayes. "Earlier, I saw your sketches. You are quite talented.
I shook his hand and said, "Thank you."
Lucas went on, "I have an investment firm that supports emerging designers." We're constantly searching for new talent to support. Have you thought about doing more work?"
My thoughts were racing. It felt too nice to be true, yet this might be the respite I needed.
With hesitation, I answered, "I... I'd love to." "But more information about your company would be helpful."
"Obviously," Lucas responded with ease. "How about we arrange a meeting? I'll go into great depth about everything.
Before I could reply, Anna showed up next to me.
"You're amazing, Kate! She cried out. Three of your designs are wanted by that woman over there!"
I laughed, a wave of pride washing over me. Perhaps things were finally improving.
Lucas gave his card to me. "Consider my offer. I will stay in contact.
Lucas went inside a darkened room in a tall structure later that night. Vanessa was already there, crossing her legs and relaxing on a leather chair.
She remarked, her voice brimming with annoyance, "You're late."
After pouring himself a drink, Lucas answered, "I had business to attend to."
Vanessa raised an eyebrow. Does Kate Dawson have anything to do with this?"
Lucas grinned. She shows promise. Very encouraging.
"Good," Vanessa remarked in a cold tone. "Because I need her to be permanently removed from Simon's life."
Lucas thoughtfully stirred his glass. "Don't you want me to ruin her?"
Vanessa said, "Use her, ruin her, I don't care." Just watch out that Simon's pitiful sentiments for her don't divert him. I will not allow her to thwart my intentions now that he is mine.
Leaning against the glass, Lucas's eyes reflected the city lights. Think of it as finished. Remember, nevertheless, that this partnership is reciprocal. I need to settle my score with Simon.
Vanessa had a piercing smile. "Then we agree."
Lucas held out his glass. "To collaborations."
With evil gleams in her eyes, Vanessa answered, "To destruction."
