Step Two: Elevating Him to the Pinnacle
Of course, I wasn't doing it out of the goodness of my heart.
This society is incredibly unfair to women, especially in the workplace. Take Aidan, for example. He managed to outmaneuver several competitors to reach a position where he could compete with Roderick, simply because he is a man. Among his former competitors, the strongest was a woman. I met her once and still remember the look of desolation on her face at Aidan's promotion party.
Since the birth of our eldest son, I had been a full-time housewife, dedicating myself to being Aidan's supportive partner. Now, returning to the workforce, I found it hard to keep up with the pace of society. If Aidan and I ended up divorcing, I would certainly lose custody of the children without a job. My only option was to cling to Aidan, using him to pave the way for my future, just as he had used me and our daughter to create the illusion of a good husband and loving father, forging his own path to prominence.
When I could turn Aidan into a successful corporate pawn, that would be my victory.
The competition between Aidan and Roderick for the position of General Manager of the Bligate region had reached a fever pitch. Even the members of their respective teams were at each other's throats. Now, it was all about who could stand out more. For this, Roderick's wife was fervently fawning over money with Lauren.
Roderick was an honest man, and so was his wife. They didn't understand that to truly enter a circle, you needed to exchange benefits.
I organized an in-person charity auction, specifically putting up the diamond jewelry set I had prepared for our tenth wedding anniversary as the finale auction item. All proceeds from the auction would be donated to the company's charitable foundation in the name of the spouses' association.
Lauren's expression was quite intriguing when she saw that I was even putting up the anniversary gift.
"Miriam, you're a smart woman. I like you because of your cleverness. Smart people shouldn't do foolish things."
She was hinting that I shouldn't invest everything for a man.
I smiled and poured Lauren a cup of tea. "As the old saying goes, every misfortune may bring a blessing. Jewelry is just a dead object. If I can use it to gain an opportunity, then it's a win for me."
Lauren was surprised by my transformation but was willing to give me this chance.
At the charity sale, I stood beside Lauren, taking the spotlight as a key organizer. The diamond necklace I donated left a good impression in front of the media.
When Aidan heard the news, he was so excited that he wanted to hug me, but I politely declined, saying I needed to pick up the kids to celebrate.
I could still endure not divorcing him now because I was waiting for the right moment to deliver the fatal blow. Every second with him made me feel utterly disgusted.
Aidan had no idea that I was strategically transitioning out of my housewife role, completely unaware that he was stepping into my trap, step by step.
I looked at the promotion announcement Aidan posted on his social media, smiling as I opened a document and began writing an anonymous complaint letter.
