Chapter 6 Dependent On Each Other

Caldwell gritted his teeth and fury flashed across his eyes.

In the living room, Sabina passed by and saw Rosina sitting on the sofa in pajamas. She smiled and greeted warmly, "Good morning, ma'am. Did you sleep well last night?"

Last night, when she heard car engine outside, she got out of the bed to check. Seeing that Caldwell had returned, she was very happy.

It was Caldwell's mother who had arranged this marriage for him, so Sabina thought Rosina must be perfect.

As a result, Sabina was quite enthusiastic about the new Mrs. Walsh.

Rosina stiffly forced a smile and said timidly, "It wasn't bad."

"That's good. Please go and freshen up. Breakfast is ready," Sabina said as she headed into the dining room.

Rosina rubbed her sleepy eyes and yawned.

She reasoned that Caldwell must've gotten dressed by now.

She tiptoed to the bedroom and knocked on the door, but there was no response.

Thinking that the man had left the room, she opened the door, only to be greeted by an icy cold gaze that sent shivers down her spine.

Caldwell was holding a piece of paper in his hand tightly.

When Rosina saw her things all over the floor, her heart leaped to her throat.

Trying to keep calm, she took a deep breath and asked pointedly, "What're you doing with my things? This is an invasion of privacy!"

"Privacy?" Caldwell sneered with an incredulous look in his eyes.

He stood up and threw the paper in front of Rosina. "You had the audacity to marry me with a bastard in your belly. Now you dare to talk about privacy?"

"I..." All the color drained from Rosina's face.

Caldwell strode to her and pinched her chin. "Tell me. What's the real reason why you married me?"

Did she want him to become the father of that bastard? Did she want that bastard to become his first son? Was the deal she proposed just her expedient?

Caldwell's expression darkened.

Rosina's heart nearly stopped in her chest, but she maintained her calm expression. "I didn't mean to hide it from you. Our marriage is just a deal and we'll be divorcing in a month, so I didn't think it mattered. I do not have any ulterior motives."

"Is that so?" Caldwell tightened his grip on her chin.

Rosina winced in pain. "I'm telling the truth. I know that if I crossed a line with you, you have the means to erase me from this earth."

Caldwell's eyes fell on her belly and his expression hardened. "You'd better be telling me the truth, or I won't spare you."

Rosina nodded and subconsciously touched her belly, as though to protect the child.

This child came unexpectedly, but she was planning to keep it. It was her flesh and blood after all.

She hadn't told anyone about it—not even her mother. She had kept the pregnancy report with her at all times, in case of being discovered.

Unexpectedly, on the second day of their marriage, Caldwell found out about it.

With a sulky face, Caldwell warned her again. "If I find out that you've been messing with me behind my back..."

"I promise I'll behave myself. If I do anything out of line, I'll be at your disposal." Before Caldwell could finish his words, Rosina hurriedly reassured him.

Even if she couldn't win his trust completely, she couldn't let him doubt her motives.

She was relying on this marriage to take back her mother's property from Perry.

Caldwell looked deep into her eyes, as though searching for the truth.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.

"Mr. and Mrs. Walsh, breakfast is ready," Sabina reminded in a cheery tone.

Caldwell withdrew his hand and restrained his emotions for the time being. "Clean up this mess."

Then, he turned around and walked out.

As soon as Caldwell left, Rosina leaned against the wall behind her, her heart palpitating madly. It took a long time for her to calm down.

She squatted down and picked up the things scattered on the floor. When she saw the pregnancy report, tears rolled down her cheeks.

She wiped her tears with the back of her hand and sniffed. Then, she put away the report, changed her clothes, and went out.

In the dining room, she saw a half-eaten breakfast and an empty coffee cup. Caldwell was nowhere to be seen.

Rosina heaved a heavy sigh of relief.

After breakfast, she went back to her apartment.

As soon as she entered the apartment, Josie stood up from the sofa and approached her. "How is Mr. Walsh?"

Rosina smiled at her mother reassuringly. "He's a good man, Mom. Don't worry about me."

Tears welled up in Josie's eyes. "I'm sorry that I couldn't protect you."

Rosina hugged her and patted her on the back. "I said, don't worry about me. I'm happy as long as you're by my side."

At lunch, Josie lovingly prepared Rosina's favorite fish soup as she noticed that her daughter didn't look so good.

Just as Rosina brought a spoonful of soup close to her face, she smelled the fish.

She couldn't help but retch and hurried to the bathroom.

"Rosina?"

Josie followed her to the bathroom worriedly. Seeing that Rosina was retching next to the toilet, Josie's heart sank.

She asked in a trembling voice, "Rosina, what's wrong?"

Rosina's body suddenly froze, and she clenched her fists tightly.

She turned around and looked at her mother, plucking up all the courage she could muster.

"Mom, I'm pregnant."
