Chapter 3 Meeting Brian Again

"The CEO may come to our branch today to oversee. Everyone, prepare yourself and expect for him."

At the director's instructions, all kinds of expressions were visible on everyone's face. Some of them were as excited as Lora, while most were serious. Naturally, others were just indifferent, including Kate.

Unfortunately, although the CEO would come to the company, it didn't mean that he would humble himself to their small office. They had been waiting the whole afternoon, but they didn't see even just the corner of the CEO's suit.

"Well, it seems that we aren't really destined to see the CEO," sighed Lora as she passed by Kate, lowering her head.

Kate had asked for a morning leave so that she could run some personal errands. As a newcomer to the workplace, she didn't dare to loaf around and had to finish her word before leaving. In the end, she could only watch her colleagues leave one by one.

Lora was so disappointed that she completely ignored Kate and walked out of the office like a ghost.

The narrow office suddenly became wide and spacious after the other people had left. Kate took a deep breath and began to work.

At about eight o'clock in the evening, she finally sorted out her documents. When she stood up and stretched her back, her phone rang. It was Sherry.

In a livelier mood, Kate picked up the phone and said, "Darling," while on her way out of the company. The night in Z City wasn't dark, but the surrounding was orange, illuminated by lights.

The warm wind blew over her soft, pretty face. Her hair was flying in the direction of the wind. The tight uniform set off her curvy figure, making her like a tempting goddess at night.

She didn't look like a lesbian at all, but this world was diverse. Kate was just a part of this world, and she became a lesbian. Though this characteristic wasn't that obvious.

"Well, I'm going home now. See you later." After these words, Kate hung up the phone with a sweet smile on her face.

She was a little bit more ecstatic after her conversation with Sherry. That night, the light in the company wasn't very bright because they wanted to save electricity.

On her way out, she accidentally bumped into something. It was her forehead that hit first.

She raised her head and saw a familiar face. "Eh, why are you here?" she exclaimed.

She recalled that she went to register for her marriage with this man this morning. The man threw her at the gate of the civil affairs bureau for a reason that he was not on her way. Then, she was punished by 100 dollars, and she had to walk to work because she didn't have a single penny with her.

From being excited, Kate's mood instantly changed to being irritated as soon as she thought of what had happened this morning. She looked up at Brian and smiled sarcastically, "What a coincidence! 'I'm not on your way!'"

Her tone was full of irony.

"You're working here?" Unaware of sarcasm in Kate's words, Brian asked her lightly.

"Yes, I am an employee of this company." Hearing this question, Kate squared her shoulders and put on a look of confidence.

Li's Group was famous in Z City, and the selection of employees was stringent. They were particular even when it came to choosing a sweep worker. But correspondingly, Li's Group was highly paid. Kate, such a common employee, could earn thousands of dollars every month.

There were two men in suits and leather shoes following Brian. They looked at Kate with a frown. One of them even wanted to step forward but was stopped by Brian's gesture.

"If you don't have anything else to say, I'm leaving now. Mr. Not-On-Your-Way." Kate was staring sternly at Brian. She didn't try to conceal her emotions even slightly. Her disgust and sarcasm were obvious on her face.

She was so disgusted that she wasn't in the mood to ask what his position was in this company. After that, she took three steps away from Brian, just like bypassing a pile of trash, and left.

"Boss, do you need us to deal with that woman?" The manager of the branch, standing behind Brian, had been in a cold sweat. His back was shivering, for he had never seen a woman who could be so rude to his boss.

"Just take it as nothing happened." The sound of Brian's voice came from the empty lobby of the company. With his voice, the atmosphere in the lobby was suddenly tensed that nobody dared to make a sound.

As she walked into the Faraway Community, Kate could see the white light of their apartment. Looking at the lights, she felt warm in her heart.

Kate quickened her pace.

At this time, Kate's mother called her. She answered it while walking.

"Hello, Mom. What's up?" asked Kate.

"Kate! If you didn't want to go on a blind date in the first place, you should've told me. What were you trying to imply by standing that man up? Didn't you say that you fell in love with each other at first sight? And you are going to get a marriage certificate? How could you lie to me?" Kate's mother shouted at the phone.

To not hurt her ear, Kate moved her cellphone a little bit away from her. She said impatiently, "When did I lie to you? We have gotten-"

"Gotten what? The matchmaker has called and blamed me why made that man wait for you the whole night!" Before Kate could finish her sentence, her mother, Mary Luo, raised her voice again.

Kate didn't know how to respond to that.

Didn't she go to see him last night? They had even registered for the marriage today. What was going on?

"But I went there yesterday," explained Kate.

"Are you still lying to me?" Mary Luo sneered.

"Mom, the man you're referring to is Brian Li, right? Am I right?" asked Kate. Suddenly, she felt uncertain.

"Who's Brian Li? Brian Li? I haven't met a man with that name before! Your blind date was Brain Li!" yelled Mary Luo in a loud voice again.

Kate's feet froze and she asked in confusion, "Mom, are you sure?"

"Wow, you even know how to pass the buck? I'm not that old to forget the right name!"

"I..." Kate hemmed and hawed. She didn't know what to say.

She got the wrong person! And other than that, they got married. How could she explain it to her mother?

If she told the truth, she wasn't sure whether her mother would scold or even punish her.

But how could she confess it indirectly?

Now, she didn't want her mother to know about her marriage at all. She just wanted to inform her mother that she was in a relationship. There was no need to feed her with so much information.

After hesitating for a while, Kate mustered up all her courage and burst into tears. "Mom, I'm sincerely sorry! It's my fault. I shouldn't have lost my way last night. I had to send an old woman who had an accident. She was so lonely that I chose to accompany her. I shouldn't have done those, so I wouldn't have missed Brain. The last thing I shouldn't do was lie to you just to cover up the things I did last night, which were innocently kind. I know you would blame me for being stupid because I insisted on sending an injured stranger to the hospital. You've told me to be more careful all the time. And that I don't have to be nice all the time. It's my fault!" cried Kate.

And her pathetic voice attracted many people's attention. Some people let out a shallow sigh.

Hearing that, Mary Luo was dumbfounded.

"Mom, I did another mistake. That old woman's son came to pick her up. We fell in love with each other at first sight. And he offered to drive me back home, which I gladly accepted." Kate stopped crying and said while sobbing a little.

"What? You let him drive you back home?" Mary Luo raised her voice.

"Well, he gave me money to get a cab, but I refused. I also refused when he directly gave me his bank card," said Kate.

The other side of the line remained silent for a moment. Then suddenly, a horrible laugh sounded. "Okay, my daughter, you've done too well! You can't accept his bank card. If you accepted it, people would think that you're greedy. He was testing you. You have to show that you're not interested in money. Just keep on fishing in the long term."

"Yes, Mom," Kate responded obediently at once.

During the two years of blind dates, Kate had already known what kind of a perfect son-in-law her mother wanted. For one thing, he must be rich because this could help Kate live a carefree life. For the other thing, his personality should guarantee that Kate wouldn't be abandoned after marriage.

After talking with her mother, Kate walked with ease. If she didn't wear a pair of high-heeled shoes, she might be dancing now.

But why was Brian in her company building a while ago? After her excitement, the scene of seeing Brian in the company emerged in her mind.

That was weird. Was Brian working for that company as well? It was possible. Otherwise, how could Brian have money to buy a high end car? Li's Group was nothing but rich. It was an established group which ranked first among the list of wealthiest corporation in Z City.

Well, she really didn't expect that Brian was her colleague. But fortunately, they were not in the same office, or it would be embarrassing.

However, Kate was still curious about something. That man was really handsome, but why had she never heard about him from Lora? She remembered that Lora said there was no good looking bachelor in Li's Group other than the CEO.

Or was Brian just wandering around?

Kate was thinking about it for a long time but couldn't figure out the answer. As she walked towards the doorway, she gradually forgot about it.

Her so-called home was just a tiny yet cozy apartment she rented with Sherry. To save money, they decided to live together after their graduation. In fact, Kate had never imagined what it would be like to be a lesbian. They just didn't want to be with any men, so they got along and became best friends.

Considering how intimate they could be, even in public, it was inevitable for people to not gossip about them.

When Kate went into their home, she instantly felt the warmth it could offer. That time, Sherry had already prepared their dinner. Before taking off her shoes, Kate quickly walked into the kitchen, putting her arms around Sherry's waist.

Subconsciously, Sherry struggled at first. However, when she turned around and saw that it was Kate, she turned into a submissive lady and let Kate hold her.

"You look so happy. Did you get married successfully?" Taking her apron off, Sherry turned around and gently smiled at Kate.

Kate nodded heavily and took out a marriage certificate from her bag. She grinned and replied, "Yes, I'm okay. I'm married now. Finally, Mom doesn't have to worry that I couldn't get married anymore."
